OW ('53 Jube) and I spent quite a bit of quality time together this weekend. He held his own working side by side with Big John (JD 4720) and mowed 55+ acres of the tallest North Texas pasture land I have seen in several years. He is muddy as any old farm tractor should be, and quite happy about it. It took us 17 hours on the pair to mow the 55+ acres. I am now almost completly sure that OW can handle my MX6 bush hog, but I will mount and handle it in tall grass first to make sure and let y'all know. I am looking real hard at a new MX7 to go behind Big John to free up the MX6 it now pulls. I figure that if OW can pull that old junker 5' through that mess we mowed this weekend, then it will do just as well with a quality 6' like my MX6. Anybody need an old junker 5' bush hog?

Muddy, Eh? in reply to Ramrod, 04-30-2007 07:55:40
It"s STILL too muddy here in Central Texas to shred my orchard (young trees - no canopy to speak of), much less cultivate it.

The lower pastures have never been shredded this year. No doubt the Bermuda is dying to get light, but just too soft to do it.

Yep, we had 6+ inches of rain last week, but this pasture is almost all hill top and hill side, so it was mostly good. There were several soft spots that we found on the fly though. It rained again this morning and will continue through tomorrow, so it's a good thing we got it done. I already plan to do it again in 30 days or so, it's growing fast.

Ramrod, you mention adding PS to the Jub.....what's your plan? Did you buy from an aftermarked source, or are you fabricating your own?

Thanks
Brad

I went with Jackson Power Steering. He builds kits for many tractors.

No jack yet, but when it happens, I will most likely have my welding shop make it up for me. In the meantime, I'm watching for one to show up on eBay or elsewhere. OW and Big John get along fine. When we cut, OW takes the lead, he is the most experienced of the two. Mama and Big John bring up the rear, and stay well back outta range of high speed rocks. I will swap with Mama when I need John's special talents to handle a big job with the loader or back up to mow under a tree. Much easier with power steering and live PTO. BTW, next big project is to add power steering to OW. All I need is to fabricate the mounting bracket for the Chevy ps pump to mount and clear the oil filler cap and we will have power steering on OW!

That old bush hog might me a home made one. It is blue with much rust, a good big gearbox, no stump jumper, just a mounting plate, no chains or belting front or rear. It looks like a King Kutter clone, dove tailed in back with clippings exhausted in front of the tail wheel. The tail wheel has no bearings, just slip fit and grease zerks. It is really rough, but it will cut and don't complain much. It will be available when I finally make my mind up just how to go with the replacement.
