1951 6v 8n

Ok worked thru the strippoed bolt and figured out the brake drum screws (why are they even there?)

tore everyhting apart (almost everything).

Questions...
1. both brakes have two springs. Now the IT manaual shows three. In one of the parts manaul is lists that thrid spring as only for the left side. All 51 models should have three springs on both the left and right wheel rigtht?

2. The hubs are snug fit into the brake drum right? I havent tried to bust them loose. Should I? I have inspected them but the wear is not readily apparent. Because of the investment in the replacment axle shafts, I figure I will try to reuse them and if push comes to shove I can always change those out later since the hardpart to me seems to be the axles.

3. What other tips or suggestions does anyone have?

Going to get to 90F today here.... summer is here!

Go to www.8nford.com and you will find everything you need to know. That Smith guy has the best website for fixing those tractors I have ever seen. Go to maintenence items and then rear axles and brakes. Has all the pics you need.

Goatsie..... ....re: brakedrums, unlike yer highspeed belchfire-V8, there is NO NEED to turn yer 11-in brakedrums. Scratched, scored, outta'round, tapered, bell-mouthed are NOT a problem with lowspeed tractors. As to wheather yer oilsoaked brakeshoes need re-lined/replaced, yer call. Iff'n you do replace brakeshoes, chamfer the brake lining edges with file so they fit in yer grooved drums.

And YES, left brakes have 3-springs, p/n 8N-2299, spring, brake shoe secondary, 4-59in free length x 0.53OD, used in left brake assy ONLY. ($3, cheap)

Remember to RETRACT yer brakeshoes (starwheel adjusters) BEFORE trying to remove brake drum ..... ..Dell

These things were really screwed up with misisng parts and make shift fixes.

Another question...

I havent got to adjusting beraing load on the new axles yet. Kind of haviung a hard time visualizing this one. What partts have to be bolted bakc tohte axle before testing load?

As best I can tell, once the inner seal and reatiner is bolted to the axle housing then I should look at bearing load by adjusting the shims I am using?... the entire brake assmebly doesnt have to be on to check this do they?

Those screws are there just to hold the drums on while they go through the assembly phase. The left brake needs the third spring to overcome the extra mechanical linkage forces and raise the left brake pedal. The drums usually come off the axle with just a few whacks around the edge and a tap on the rear to start them moving. Since you have them off, I would advise relining the shoes, turning the drums, and replacing the springs to start fresh. The hard part for me is getting it on jack stands and removing those heavy rear wheels and tires. After that, it all gets easier.

I was reading the archives on other sites and I see now the screws hold the drum to the hub.

Missing that third spring on the left side.

I also have reviewed brake overhauls of a 9n so it is starting to come to me a little more.

Didnt have too much trouble getting tires off with the set-up I have.

I think the hardest part for me is going to be the bearing collars on the axle shafts. They are pressed fit. I figure I will have to take them to a machine shop.

Also still trying to sort out exactly what parts I need to replace... kind of confusing with all the different tweaks from year to year.

Yep, once you get over the sticker shock of how much bearings cost, you will think twice about driving them on with a hammer. I asked the guys at Purvis Bearings where they would go, and they sent me to a little shop down the road that now does all my machine shop work. I remember that they only charged a few bucks to press those bearings on my axles.
