I'm looking to rebuild a transmission on an 8N due to some big chunks of teeth missing on the visible 2nd gear main... Yes, I just learned not to loan my toys to others!

I'm seeing the second gear main, and second gear counter shaft parts available from several websites, varied prices... Any opinions on who has the best quality gears out there.

And, while I have this thing apart, any suggestions on what else should be inspected, and/or replaced, other than the basic twice over look at everything.

I haven't torn the thing apart yet, but from inspection with the tranny cover off, I don't see anything chipped or busted other than the 2nd main.

All your input is greatly appreciated.

R.

I rebuilt my Trans on my 49 8N because my 2nd gear came apart. It had bee recently rebuilt from the guy I bought it from too. I don't know where he got his parts but they are inferior to OEM parts. I replaced all non OEM tranny parts with Oem parts. The metal feels softer on the the non OEM parts.

My two cents worth.

Hargis..... ...best gears? NO IDEA but I suspect the gears are ALL MADE by the same gear company. The bookkeepers pricing scheme is probably the reason for different listed prices. Always start with yer local CNH (ex-Ford) dealer first for prices. Then ya pays yer money and make yer choices.

Just remember to replace the tranny input shaft seal $3 (cheap)..... ....Dell
