I unloosened my starter bolt to clean the gap between starter and housing (works great now) but now I have a gap between starter and housing you can put a penknife blade in. I don't think that is good.

I have a strange arrangement of one bolt and one threaded rod holding it on and can't figure out why the rod is there or how to get it to tighten up.

"(works great now)", I wonder how?

The first thing I would do is find a new set of starter bolts and figure out what the starter is hanging up on. Obviously, it should go all the way in. Cleaning the contact surfaces aint doing a lot of good if they don't touch each other.

The voltage to the spark plugs will jump a gap like that, but 6 or even 12 volts just wont work that way.

Looks like the prev owner of that N was a bit of a tinkerer. He probably lost one of the oem bolts and just used a piece of allthread and double nutted it to screw it in.

Allthread is grade 2 soft.. hope it didn't strip out.

I also see he cut some galvanized roofing tin and made a brush cover.. did a pretty good job of it too.

In any case.. i'd say you have a gap cause your bolts ain't tight.. and they aint tight for the reasons metnioned.

Pull that threaded one.. and see what it looks like on the end. Either get a new bolt.. or a new piece of allthread and go back in.. tap the starter with a mallet lightly to help it seat and then tighten her down appropriatly.
