Hello,
I just bought a 1952 8N. It ran for a bit when i first had it and now won't start.
I rebuilt the carb and reinstalled. Put in new plugs and new coil.
There is spark, blue but seems like it could be brighter.
There is fuel flowing out the bottom of the float bowl after i removed the bolt.
I spray some starting fluid in the intake with the rubber hose off and it almost starts.
My battery has been dead so i recharged but it wont start so I was boosting from my 1954 NAA to the starter and not to the battery and still wont fire up.
I' m so frustrated but cant give up.
Please help!
I read these forums daily and am so impressed by you guys and your knowledge.
Thanks

Put the battery on charge.

Check fire order, 1-2-4-3

make sure plugs are clean and gapped at about .025.

make sure points are clean and gapped at .025

Make sure you have good fuel flow thru carb... pull the down drain and let it drain into a glass jar.. should make a good stream.. if it dribbles or drips.. it's not good flow.

If you have somewhat bluish spark, and it is turning over good, and it won't start or pop with starting fluid, you have bad compression or it is severly out of time.

If both your 8n and NAA are 6v.. let the 6v naa act as a booster.. battery to battery.

post back with results from those checks.

When I puilled the plugs after trying to start they are bone dry.
no gas on them , yet fuel is pouring out my float bowl.
Should the plugs not be soaked with gas afetr trying to start it for so long?
Please Help!

Feel for manifold vacume at the carb mouth.

Give a rap on the side of the carb with a hammer HANDLE ( wood handle ).

You using choke or not?

If it don't pop on start fluid.. I still think you have a timing or compression issue.. and YES.. stuck open valves will do that to ya..

i tred choke and no choke and half choke. it almost started when the choke was closed but it just wont fire. I am wondering if it has something to do with the idle misture screw when i rebuilt the carb. maybe its in too much or not enough.
Could this lead to not starting? It was running for 30 seconds last night and then nothing and my borhter had turn the mix screw then it died on us and we could not get it going again and we set the screw in the original position or so we thought.

I fthe air screw is inn too much it will be lean.. however.. it sounds like the carb in general has problems.. if you are getting dry plugs while using choke. yet geting gas pouring out of carb. Still .. shoulda fired on starter fluid though.. if you have spark and compression and good timing..

Recheck that spark.

I will check compression tonight.
Do you think if it is low i could have valves stuck open or not sealed properly?
could i be in for a valve job?
this old tractor is casuing alot of headaches.
Thanks for your input.

The naa is 12 v thats why i was going to the starter because I read that the battery can blow up.
The plugs are gapped, I got new points to day so i will replace after work.
The gas flows heavily out the carb.
As for the timing and the firing order I had never altered them and it did run okay when i bought it a year ago, just last summer it died and since has always run poorly.
could it have gone out of timing on its own?
I'll check timing aswell tonight and post back.
Thanks so much for your input.
I appreciate it alot.

For setting the breaker contacts? ( your manual -grin- ).

Side mount ( front mount too.. ) points are super easy to set.

Once you get the distrib open, see how the old points are attatched.. remove the old ones and put the new ones in usung same screw hardware. Now.. get your feeler gauge.. CLEAN.. and set it so that the rubbing block is opening the points to .025 on the tops of the lobes. Use the starter to bump it over.. don't roll it backwards ( by hand ).. make sure you are rolling it forwards. When done.. see if they sent you a grease packet.. if so.. use it and use a wire or small screwdriver to put a dab on the breaker pivot, and then a tab on the rubbing block where it contacts the lobes.. leading side... if no grease packet.. stiff chassie grease works fine... not to much.. a little dab will do.. pigeon pea size or less..
