Alright guys, I have replaced the gauges in my 6v 8n and I still don't have anything but a "jump" occasionally when I turn on the key. It just stays zeroed. My old gauge was junk, with the loop so I cut the harness and put ends to connect to the post of the newer style. Now I understand you could get a backwards reading and you would need to switch the + or - but I have nothing. Any Help, please.

I am not the one to put a word in here. (That said, I'm gonna anyways)

Now you have told us what happens when you turn your switch on.

You haven't told us what happens when it is running (I am gonna assume nothing).

Have you polorized your genny since this endeavor?

Hmm jump eh, that sounds like you have installed
a Volt meter in that line. Is zero on the meter in the middle (ammeter) or on the far left(Volt meter)?

If I Understand Your Description... in reply to Phil (NJ,AZ,Sask), 05-03-2007 16:24:06
If I understand you correctly, instead of the standard 3 amps or so static discharge you should see with the ignition on but not cranking, you are seeing NO discharge except for an occasional "burp."

If this is the case, your points may be providing a good path to ground only intermittently. You can try cleaning, replacing, and/or re-gapping them.

Keep going until you get a STEADY 3 amp discharge. The ammeter should only "jump" when cranking, as the points open and close and the current flow starts and stops.

Oh, Yeah... in reply to A, Bohemian, 05-03-2007 16:48:19
It could also be your ignition switch. These are problematic and seem to go bad fairly often.

Mine often gives good contact only if I wiggle it a little. I need to replace it; my Ford is a 3 cyl Diesel and so will run with the electrical system turned off; but electricity powers the idiot lights...
