I have a '53 8N that starts fine but it will only run for about 30 seconds. Then it quits!

Do you think this is a fuel problem?

Any ideas where I should start?

Thanks,
Steve

I have to confess, I goofed.

Switched the 1&2 plug wires at the distributor while putting on the tune-up kit.

It turned over one time and backfired.

Do I have to worry about something bent or distorted in the engine?

Since then I haven't been able to get it to start.

I did drain the gas and clean the fuel filter so that should be fine.

I guess I'll go over all the connections again.

Any suggestions would be helpful

Thanks!

Steve..... ...IT AIN'CHUR CARB!!! keep yer ittchy-twitchy fingers away from them handy-dandy carb tweek'ems. Understand?

Well gee, iff'n you think its a fuel problem, why not check yer fuel filters? Simple, eh?

I'm not gonna scold you about not knowing that flathead 8Ns were last made in 1952 with the carb on the right side; or OHV Red Tiger engines were installed on 1953 NAA Jubilees with the carb on the leftside. Four sparkies is 4-sparkies, eh?

Howsomevers, 30-sec runtime is usually a bad condenser. (time for tune-up kit, eh?) Usually, it takes about 3-mins for clogged fuel filters to empty out the carb and cause it to quit running. But don't discount WATER in the gas. Pull the carb drainplug and letter'pee in a qt-glass jar so you can visually inspect for water/foggy gas.

Sometimes yer weaksister ignition switch will cut-out in 30-secs, but generally its a 15-min runtime quitter. Gott some ideas now? ..... ..respectfully, Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Thanks for the info, that should be what I need to fix this thing.

I'm shootin' from the hip as far as '53, it could be a '52, I had that figured out once upon a time and forgot. But I still know it's about as old as I am.

OT: 8N Question in reply to Dell (WA), 05-06-2007 11:35:48
You say the 8N carbs are on the right? Sitting on the seat my 1949 8N carb is to the left. So how is left and right determined. I thought it was from sitting on the seat facing forward. Left side was your left and right side was your right. Have I had it wrong all this time?

I can't comment on how YOUR tractor is... but the clutch is on the left. The air cleaner, carb and governor, too, are all on the right side of the tractor... no matter WHERE you look at it from.... from 39 through 52..

I have never seen an N set up to the contrary.

Send pictures..... ..... ..... .....

Pooh---You have it right, but..... .I have a 49 8N with the original engine in it. Sitting in the seat the carb IS on the right hand side of the engine. My 51 8N with original engine has the carb on the right side also.

What is the serial # on your engine?----Tim
