Folks, I have a real problem with the differential and I thought that maybe I could get a few hints from the knowledgeable people that frequent this board.

I have a Jubile tractor that will not move, forward or reverse. While mowing with it, I heard a snap when I put it in reverse and let out the clutch. It sounded really bad and the sound appeared to come from the right rear wheel. Then, it would no longer back up. It would go forward. So, like an idiot, I drove it back to the barn. Then, snap. No more forward. Again, the sound appeared to come from the right rear wheel.

Today, I put the rear end up in the air with the wheels off the floor. I was able to turn both wheels forward and backward by moving the right rear wheel. Seems like the axel is okay. I did, however, noticed that when I moved the right rear wheel forward or back, there was a small about of travel before the other rear wheel grabbed. But, both wheels turned.

I started the motor and put it in 1st gear. After nudging the wheel, both rear wheels began to spin. Again, in reverse, same thing.

Then, I removed the hydraulic system under the seat. I started the motor and noticed that the shaft from transmission to the differential housing moved forward and backward with 1st and reverse gears engaged.

So, it the break has to be in the differential housing.

So, any ideas what is broken? Anyone seen this before?

What a nightmare!
Thanks in advance for all your thoughts on this!
What a great place!

Patrick

Pull your PTO Shaft and take a peek. If you point the nose down hill you won"t lose as much fluid. Reach in and feel around in the gunk for rivets, teeth excectra. You should be able to see the gears from there for a inspection. Lock one wheel and try to turn it in gear. If you can turn the wheels in neutral (both off the ground)and the other goes a diferent way it means the spider gears are working OK but has nothing to do with the ring and pinion. You need to lock one wheel to test the ring gear or turn it. Pull the coil wire and use the starter to turn it over and see if the free wheel turns. You may have busted a tooth in the tranny also. Either way you need to get inside and find out what is wrong this won"t go away. You just need to find out what section you need to fix. Good Luck, Mark H.

My guess is that you have broken the rivets, or bolts that hold the ring gear to the carrier.
If so, you will want to pull of the left side axel housing to get to it, I had this very same thing happen to an 8N that i once had.

Ring gear and pinion most likely. Tear it down and be ready for a few surprises.
