My father-in-law gave me a 9n that has been setting up out of the weather for about 5 years. I have cleaned it up, drained and refilled gas tank, overhauled the carb, put in new plugs but I can't get it to start even if I use starting fluid. It has blue fire at all plugs and good compression. What should I concentrate on first? It has a 6 volt system

Check oil level in air filter. The N I brought the owner thought motor was shot due to fouling plugs, it too had been left out in the weather. Had 2 in of water in air filter this raised the oil level to point it sucked oil into the intake.

If you have lots of oil getting sucked into intake it will foul even new plugs quicker than #$%t! Mine would start but foul all plugs < 5 min. Cleaned out air filter and I get 1-year/set of plugs

Not to hijack this thread but can you tell me what the purpose of the oil in the air cleaner is, how much oil should be at the bottom of the can and what kind of oil it should be? Thanks

Greg,

Get you a new set of Autolite 437 plugs. Even if your current plugs are new, they are probably gas soaked and won"t fire under compression. The AL437 plugs are a range hotter than specification calls for, but work better with today"s gas. Also, I have had bad luck with Champion plugs.

If you DO have blue spark, AND compression, AND you are using start fluid.. then the timing must be way off.. or you are getting no air. OR.. one of the items you are assuming is good.. isn't.

Greg,If your getting the right amount of fuel, have good compression and blue spark it should run.First check and clean, or disconnect your air cleaner. You may have a pluged air cleaner. Next check or replace your spark plugs if you have flooded the engine.Be sure the fireing order is correct #1 #2 #4 #3.Try to start it again.Be sure its not flooding over with fuel. You may try to pull start it.

Not so much rusty just lots of sediment and stale gas smell. I spent lots of time cleaning the tank, changed the sediment bowl screen and put a new elbow in the carb with a new screen. I am getting good flow to the carb.

Pull the tube off the carb going to the air cleaner. Thne with it OUT OF GEAR hold your hand on the intake of the carb. Does it #1 try to suck your hand in?? #2 does your hand get covered with gas?? If you say no to either one of these then you have either a mainifold leak or your not getting gas into the carb and your float or needle is stuck or set wrong. Also if your have got one yet get an I-T FO-4 manual it will help you a lot

When you drained the tank, what did the fuel flow look like? Did any rust come out?
