Okay, here we go. I totally restored my 1948 8N about five years ago. We used it for two years and it sat idle for the last three years, outside and covered in a plastic tarp. I have since drained all old gas, added a new battery, coil, points and cap. She just turns over. What am I missing???

The main problem turned out to be no ground to the distributor. I scraped and cleaned the mating block surface and sprayed with carb clean. Once everything was installed she started with a little help with ether. The water pump had dripped right where the distributor was. Needless to say, the pump has been replaced.

Rich take if from one rich to another, use tranny fluid instead of the MMO and save your self a few bucks. Also I would put more then just a table sppon in, say more like a !/2 cup in each cylinder and let it sit till tomorrow, pull the plugs and turn it over to clean the cylinders and then put the plugs back in a try to start it, it will smoke for a few but that clears up fast. The tranny fluid will do the same thing as MMO but at less then half the cost

Didnt mention if you checked for spark...Is it blue? Sitting that long you should clean all the wiring connections...

Richard,

It could be lack of compression because of stuck rings from sitting for 3 years. Check compression. It should be a minimum of 90 PSI. Next do a wet compression test (a little oil in each sparkplug hole before checking). If compression comes up quite a bit with wet test, probably stuck rings. Try putting about a spoonful Marvel Mystry Oil (MMO)in each cylinder each day for about 3 days. Then repeat compression test.

Also, will it fire on starting fluid?

Danny

Hello Dan

I haven't tried the ether yet nor a compression test. I need to find my compression tester now. Thanks
