49 8N. I got the head gasket and head put back together. Not tough at all. But before I can test the repair, I think I blew my starter or relay. I did not change to new plugs and could not get it started after the repair. After too many attempts she just gave up trying to turn over. The battery is not the issue it has 6.4v. The relay all of a sudden started to just click and get red hot when depressing the ignition button. Does that mean bad relay (i hope) or bad starter (i think)? Also after I get her up and running again. How long before I re torque the head? Thanks for all the help. Rick T.

Easiest way to verify if starter or relay is to bypass relay... be safe.. put tractor in neutral.. block clutch down.. etc.. don't run yourself over..

Hi Sounder, I did that. i got no revolutions just sparks at the solenoid. Do you think it"s the starter?
Thanks Rick T.

I'm not sure why you got sparks at the solenoid if yuo bypassed it... IE.. the solenoid should not be in the system.. thus no sparks at the solenoid....???

Once you jump directly to the starter then you can continue troubleshooting.

If the starter won't turn when hooked up directly to a good battery.. my next guess is a bad connection / bad coils/brushes.. or it is hung inthe ring gear... typical fix for the hang issue is to put tractor in high gear.. grab rear tire and rock vigorously back and forth till you hear it pop out.. this is also good cardiovascular exercise (grin).

If it is not hung.. try rapping on the side o' the starter with a hammer.. if she turns after that.. My guess is she neads tearing down and rebuilt.. and brushes at a minimum.. perhaps bushings. and commie dressing..

ratropia, any time trying to start the tractor makes the cable hot, you have a short or bad cable connection, and its usually bad cable connections. RP

Endless cranking the starter motor is counter- intuitive....also expensive, as you may learn. If you have gas and spark, then likely the plugs are contaminated.

You could tow it to try get it running... you'll re-torque the head after 20 or 30 minutes of gentle run time.
