I'm having problems getting my 8n to start. Think the problem is in the carb. I have spark at the plugs, but they are dry, no gas on them. I pulled the drain plug out of the bottome of the carb, and didn't get any gas out of it. So decided to take the carb off and check inside it. Float bowls were full so not sure what is going out. But I also noticed on the bottome of the carb there is another small hole drilled into it. There is what looks like a casting mark, and right in the middle of it is this hole. Friend at work has a 8n also, I had him check his carb and it doesn't have this hole. Any ideas? The tractor has been running. should I be looking for another carb?

Randy..... ..NO, the sinstered bronze filter )p/n: 8N9694, strainer, sinstered bronze. ($5, cheap) also available from John Deere as p/n: 95-78) is NOT part of enny carburetor rebuild kit. That is WHY I quoted you the part number and WHERE to get one..... ..Dell

Thanks for the quick replys. I will check to see if I can find a new vent hole "filter" I figured that was what it had to be, a vent or weep hole, just couldn"t believe there wasn"t something more in it. Well I guess I can for this tractor, it has had a hard life. As far as the elbow inlet with the screen in it, that is long gone. It just has a brass fitting with a rubber hose clamped to it. I"m thinking I will see if I can find another carb cheap and rebuild it. Thanks Randy

Randy..... .you write..... "noticed on the bottome of the carb there is another small hole drilled into it. There is what looks like a casting mark, and right in the middle of it is this hole. Friend at work has a 8n also, I had him check his carb and it doesn't have this hole. Any ideas?"..... .yep, thats the carb throat DRAIN. Up-draft carbs need the ability to DRAIN gas flooding.

The drainhole is "filtered" by a "sinstered-bronze" (tiny tiny bronze balls pressure welded together) FILTER. This allows the carb to drain but not suck dirt into the carb. The little "pressure-welded" balls "melt" in a strong carb cleaner. New filter p/n: 8N9694, strainer, sinstered bronze. ($5, cheap) also available from John Deere as p/n: 95-78.

Install with appropriately sized flat-faced "punch" & hammer (I used a bolt-end)..... .Dell

Like old said... that bowl drain is.. well.. the bowl drain.. you can't remove the plug nd have the bowl full unles it is plugged up.. Sounds like it needs a full tear down, 'dip' and then have the holes chased with fine copper wire.. then blown out with compressed air.

plan on replacing all gaskets and rubber seals / packing as the 'dip' pretty much eats everything including paint.

You say you pulled the drain plug and no gas out but you also said the float bowl is full of gas. From what you say it sounds like you need to rebuild the carb since about the only thing that can stop gas comeing out with the drain plug out is a big build up of rust and other junk in the carb and if thats true that will clog up the main jet and other areas of the carb so ya it will not run

first, did you remove the elbow that the fuel line hooks to on the carb, and clean the filter? if you did, then pull the drain from bottom of carb, then pull the main throtle adjusting screw at top of carb and squirt a half can of carb cleaner through thr top, and let it run out the bottom. if it wont run out the bottom, you will need to rebuild the carb.
