I'm new to the forum and have read severals posts about the ups, downs, pros cons of a converting an 8N to a 12V system and the 1-wire vs. 3-wire setup. I've had the kit (from Atlantic, Int. Dist., Inc.) for almost a year & am finally getting around to installing it. The alternator in the kit is the aftermarket 1-wire type. My question is since it has a "self-exciting" internal regulator, can I wire it in the 3-wire fashion or will that damage the regulator? Thanks.

I had the folks at my local alternator shop test the alternator this morning and the self-excitation started at a very low RPM so it apparently has the updated regulator. I'll install it as a one-wire and run it for a while. If it starts acting up I'll switch to a 3-wire config. Thanks for all the feedback. BTW the brand name on the alternator is UniPoint.

I purchased an 8N with a one wire alternator and I rewired it as if it were a three wire alternator. Has been that way for a couple of years. Works good and no problems. Starts charging a lot quicker. Others on this board have done the same thing.

Thanks for the quick feedback. From my reading I found this to be a highly discussed topic. Sorry to keep beating a dead horse but my eyes were getting crossed from reading all the posts and not finding a specific answer.

I live in a small farming town in Texas and we are fortunate to have an outstanding alternator repair shop. The fellow their told me the same thing that the earlier self-exciting regulators were bad about not exciting except at really high RPM. He also said that there is now one that excites at a low RPM. So, I"m going to bring the alternator to him and he"ll test it to see how quickly it excites.

As far as the brand of alternator goes, I"m not sure. I don"t have it in front of me but I"ll check & report back.

Would that be North Texas? I have the best alternator and starter guy in all of Texas here in NTX.

Actually its in Central Texas just NE of Austin in the big city of Taylor. The place is called Taylor Auto Electric. Its the neatest shop. Been there for as long as I can recall which is at least 50 years. I recently needed an internal part for my 48 8N generator and they had one on the shelf. In contrast I needed a diode assembly for my 80 Triumph TR7 - they had one in stock.

Ramrod, Could you share with me the location of this alternator/starter expert. Though my tractor is located near Buffalo, Texas. I do have relatives that pass thru Dallas heading north if'en I need something for repair in the future. Is he near the Dallas-Mckinney-Sherman Texas area?
Thank you,

I believe some of the newer 1-wire alternators may have at least partially solved the low RPM charging problem. Even so, my preference is to leave my 8N alone. The 6-volt system works great, and I have plenty of other things that are actually broken that I can work on.

Zeckie..... ...iff'n you've been reading the archives and constant re-posting of the same question, you should ALREADY know the answer.

I'm NOT a fan of the deceptively desirable 1-wire tricky converted alternator 'cuz they don't start charging until about MAX tractor engine rpms.

I am NOT an alternator repairman, I DON'T KNOW iff'n you can re-bas*ardize yer tricky 1-wire alternator by simply re-wiring it without replacing the solid-state guttz.

Its yer tractor, convert it ennyways that pleases you, and iff'n you let the smoke out, you'll know it can't be done..... ..Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reason

Hey Dell,
Thanks for the info. Again I apologize for the rehash but I got tired of reading and figured I'd just take my lumps and ask.

As I mentioned my alternator repairman is going to test it to see how quickly the thing excites and we'll go from there. He knows the trick to modify the internal regulator so it can be wired in a 3-way config.

I have probably rebuilt at least a hundred alternators of every variety. I have also rewired quite a few "one wire" alternators for discontented owners as three wire alternators. No problems so far. If you buy the three wire alternator to begin with, it is cheaper than the one wire alternator. If you think you want to pay extra and get the one wire alternator, you can always rewire it as a three wire alternator when you become dissatisfied with the drawbacks of the one wire configuration. No problem.

What type of alt is it?

I have seen '1' wire Gm's that were hooke dup as 3 wire, and either worked the same.. or better.. Sometimes you get units with a difficult to remove cap over the spade plugs.

Post what ya got..

I'm not sure what type it is. I don't have it with me at the moment but I'll check & repost.
