All I can find for trans/dif/hydraulic fluid is 80-90W gear oil but it does not say GL-1, it says GL-4 or 5.
Now i know everyone is going to say go to NAPA but i tried, they looked at me like i was stupid.
I'm in Canada. Ford/NH dealer only has master trans 134. And i cant get there for days and i need my tractor today. I got the 80-90 W but it says its GL-5 and 4 so i'm lost.....
Whats the difference between mineral oil and regular oil from the autostore?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I just had NAPA get 5 gallons of GL1 on Thursday, they didn"t have it in stock but got it overnight for me. $41.00 Is what I paid.

I ruined an expensive sprayer by puting Ammonia in it to try to run some racoon out of my barn.
The Ammonia disolved and weakened the brass causing the sprayer to blow up.
Be careful what you use in your brass hydraulic pump.

I found GL-1 in 5 gal buckets at a truck stop that sells a lot of lubricants to the trucking and timber industry. Last I bought $23 for 5 gal.

All of the Tractor Supply Stores(TSC store) carry the 90wt mineral oil in my area. Look for the one with the blue label on the bucket that states "90 wt mineral Ford 1939 - 1952 hydraulic/ transmssion oil". Cost is roughly $48 for 5 gallon bucket or $23 for 2 gallon jug. Just bought some of the TSC Ford oil from TSC this spring for my old Kubota L285 which calls for SAE 80 wt below freezing or SAE 90 wt above freezing. My transmission now operates much cooler than before as whoever had the tractor before me had installed the thin grade of univeral trans/hydraulic fluid. I think it was Zane who wrote an excellent article about the hydraulic/tranny oils which explains things nicely.

No you do not need Mineral Oil, don't know where that came from, anyone know? Gl-2 or Gl-3 would be closest to original specs. Most GL-5 and likely GL-4 have additives to prevent damage to yellow metals. Suggest you check out your available GL-4-5 on the makers web site and see if it is good for yellow metals.

River:

As you know the proper oil for your N transmission is either GL-1 or 134D. That said, if you cannot find GL-1 locally and must use GL-5 temporarily it will not hurt it providing you do not decide to leave it in there permanently.

I have been using 134D in my 1951 8N for over 5 years and it works great. It is much better than GL-1 in cold weather and I find no performance issues relative to GL-1.

As you live in Canada, I would expect that you will be pleased with 134D.

I've heard of a number of guys using that with no problems. It may not be as good for the yellow metals but I doubt that it will cause you any grief. No warranty expressed or implied..... .but I'd use it and if it worries you change it later.

If yuo went to napa nad told then you wanted part number 65-205 and they treated you badly.. then you need to call the store manager and then ask for the regional managers name / number.. then give them a call.

I guarantee you that you will suddenly see large amounts of customer service.

Every few years i have to do that down here at my local napa store.. they get lazy.. I let them know they will be getting a call refomn the regional manager.. then I make good onmy threat and DO call the regional manager and talk to him untill he/she assures me the problem will go away and that he will speak tot he store staff.

Everything turns golden after that for a few years.

I don't treat people badly.. but i also don't hesitate to talk to a superior that may put the non helpfull employee's job in perspective if I have to.

GL4 or 5 is okay if it says 'yellow metal safe'. Castrol & Penzoil make it. The pump has yellow metal bushings & some GL4 & 5 oil is not yellow metal safe.

My 8N resides in NC where it can get up tp 95-100 degrees in the summer. I use 134 in my 8N and I have had no problems, even on the hottest day. For a short while GL-4 should be fine, but don't tarry in changing to GL-1 or Ford 134. Supposedly the additives in the newer gear oils will eat up the yellow metal in the transmission.
