I live in an old house made of untreated and weathered rough sawn pine. I like this "shack" look and so do boring bumble bees. I control them with my 22 with #12 shot. I shoot them while "flying" (actually hovering). My record is 21 in a row. Could this become an olympic event? BB

I also have a problem with the wood boring bees. From what I have read and experienced, they cannot sting. They are easy to swat with a badmitton (sp) racquet, but many are too high to reach. My house has rough cut board and batten cypress, and the bees love it, Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would like to hear more about the 22 shot, its effective range, etc. Thanks, Ken-Ga

Alrite my story, I filled a old garden sprayer with burnt diesel oil. I have added a tire valve so I kin pressurize the take. So I have a gal. of the diesel oil in it the tank pressurized and have this bright idea to shoot each hole under my shed wif this black magic. Oh fergot to tell ya I cut it a little wif mineral spirits. So I aim fer the highest hole and pull the trigger. I and the side of the shed look like a dalmation dog. the stuff went every were in one instant. So much fer that idea.

Yer right John! in reply to john hunt , 05-12-2007 08:02:56
i'd forgotten about starter fluid. I've used it to knock down hornets nests...kills 'em instantly. Yer also right about it "making a great bomb"! I don't think I'd wanna use it in the house!! As far as using it fer making drugs? I didn't know THAT. Seems like it would be awful hard on the eyebrows, if ya tried to smoke it! LOL

Went by a friends place yesterday & he proudly showed me the badminton racket he uses for the same purpose. He says he is 7-2-2 for kills, misses & 'probables'. Whacks them in flight; a hit w/ no body found is a probable. Rather than anti-aircraft fire, I use a hornet spray.

I also use the badmington net for bumble bees. But for other bees and wasps I use carburator spay. It is MUCH cheaper than wasp spray. On sale they are often $1.99 for a large can(16 or 24 oz?). The carb spray lasts MUCH longer. It kills on the fly or on the nest. But you have to be quick and accurate. The spray is much finer than wasp spray, therefore, lasting much longer.

Bruce, would you believe carb cleaner spray is cheaper and kills them faster to boot.

ORDINARY SOAP KILLS INSECTS in reply to GlenIdaho, 05-12-2007 06:00:15
Ordinary soap will kill insects. It permeates their resperatory system and they drown.
In San Antonio last year, the kid's neighbor had a huge bee-hive swarm hanging down from the house eve. The county wouldn't do anything inside city limits, and animal control, pest control, etc. etc. wouldn't do anything on a Sunday, and the grandkids were out playing and we didn't know if they were "killer" bees or not... But the neighbor had a great solution. (pardon the pun) Bought a "Scotts" brand garden hose sprayer, and filled it with ordinary cheap liquid laundry detergent. Hooked it up to the hose, and sprayed that sucker down. Literally. The Bees weren't the least upset (presumeably because they thought it was just water) and they all fell off in a pile onto the ground...and died calm, satisfied lives within minutes. It was amazing to watch how un-concerned the bees were. I've also used an Ortho garden-hose sprayer and filled it with laundry soap, and sprayed down the garden vegetables. It's amazing all the undesireable bugs that left the plants, ran away a few feet and died. Worked really good, expecially in the herbs, etc. Water and lots of soap. Have at it. (And the phosphates in the cheap soap make good fertilizer....the EPA-approved low phosphate soaps aren't as beneficial for the plants, but cause them no harm either, and both kill the bugs wonderfully.)

When you had a house full of kids & a big garden, pesticides were not a problem. A number 10 can w/ kerosene in the bottom for each kid & off we went down the rows picking every living bug & dropping them in a can! Now days, I still go down the potato rows w/ a coffee can & drop in the adult beetles. But, like you said, dish detergent works fine. And, I've noticed that my garden & my neighbors gardens got a lot smaller when the free labor, ahhh, kids, left home. After all, I'm a gentleman farmer: I never plant more than my wife & kids can cultivate.
