I had a post on here the other day in regaurds to firing order.I thank those who tried to help me out,and thanks to all who share thier knowlege with the fine people who freqint this site. That said heres a twist, when i hook my 52 8n in the order described (1243)it will not start.when i hook up the plugs backwerds she purrs like a kitten.I took a morning and went through everything(electrical)with a fine tooth comb, new plugs, points, condensor, rotor, and cap.polished everything.went to fire it up and it would just turn over.Had good spark, fuel & air.So i hooked the plugs they way they were when i got it 4 3 1 2 and it runs like new.any body ever seen this before?

Firing order 4312 CCW is also 1243, 3124, and 2431 depending on where distributor is set 4312 is 180 from 1243 and the other 2 are 90 eachway. Engine don't care as long as plug fires at proper place on compression stroke.

Brad..... .giggle, sorry..... 4,3,1,2 CCW is 180deg outta time with 1,2,4,3 CCW..... giggle, snort.....ahem, sorry..... ..

Did you know your 8N's flywheel has 2-sets of ignition timing marks? and they are 180deg apart??? and Did you know iff'n you time yer distributor rotor to the "wrong" set of timing marks the firing order will be 4,3,1,2???

And only iff'n yer sphincterly challenged, would I pull the 5-nipple sidemount distributor and reset the initial distributor ROTOR timing to use the "1,2,4,3" timing marks of the flywheel. I would MARK yer distributor cap appropriately..... ..Dell, yer NON-sphincterly challenged giggly self-appointed sparkie-meister..... .sorry, ahem

Brad, are you counting the cylinder closest to the clutch as number 1?

If so it sounds like you have it wired right.

Most folks call the cylinder closest to the radiator number 1.

yes number 1 being closest to the clutch. so you're saying im 180 out of time, but it works that way so leave it. ok. thanks.by the way what is "sphincterly challenged"

Common mistake. On about 97% of all engines #1 is at the front of the tractor or in other words closes to the radiator. That holds true for as I said 97% of all in line engines and even on a V-8 #1 will still be by the radiator but #2 will be across for #1

Brad..... ..yer tractor cylinder numbering is cylinder #1 is closest to the RADIATOR. Firing order is still 1,2,4,3 CCW. Now go out and re-count yer distributor firing order.

As Dunks picture shows, iff'n you incorrectly count #1-cylinder as being closest to the clutch, then yer firing order will be 4,3,1,2, CCW as you report, and yer engine will run as you report.

BOTTOM LINE, its working, LEAVER'LOAN..... ..Dell, the NON-sphincter

tip: Go look up sphincter in yer Funk & Wagnal

Since you ARE counting number 1 from the clutch end, it is not 180° out.

My drawing also "ASSUMES" CCW rotation of the rotor button/distributor shaft.

That may, or may not, be correct.
