2N Carb problem..

I have a circa 1940s 2N with the updraft carb. Just rebuilt the tractor (new sleeves, rings, pistons, bearings), ran it most of last fall with no big problems, but noticed that sometimes it was hard to start and would flood at carb (gasoline would run out through air intake)... now it wont' start at all... same thing, lots of gasoline pouring through air intake... this tractor is like brand new, great compression after rebuild, new paint, new tires and wheels, and I really need it for mowing... any suggestions short of going out and buying a new carb? Old carb was rebuilt as well (new gaskets, valves, etc.)...

I agree with the others, needle valve stuck open or small particles holding it open. I like solid needles best but some others disagree. With either it is a persistant problem with modern thinned gasoline.

Solid tip float needle or is it the neoprene/rubber tipped needle? If solid tip, some folks recommend putting slight pressure on the needle and spinning it in the seat to help it form its seal..Is float adjusted to 1/4" above the gasket with thecaeb flipped on its back. Float will be parallel to the carb surface @ 1/4" setting.

It sounds like the float in the carb isn't shutting the gas flow off of whatever reason.

I would concentrate on that first, whether it be adjustment of the tang, bent, scraping the side, bad needle valve, or just needing a whack on the side of the carb with a screwdriver handle.

Then when you get the gas stopped running out the air intake, worry about your plugs that you have probably gassed due to the carb.

... forgot to mention... have removed carb, checked all filters (they are clean), reset needle valve to manual spec, made sure float is free and moving, all linkages working and clear, air intake clean, etc.

Check the float and make sure when you shack it that it doesn't have a slush sounds to it. If it does then you have a hole in the float and thats causeing you the problem. Also make sure you have a good brite blue spark. Also since you say its got all that gas comeing out the crab you also may have gas fouled plugs so you may need to replace them or clean them up real good a propane touch works well to clean up gas fouled plugs

Shake the float to see if it's full of gas. If it's leaking gas into the float, the float will "sink" and never shut off the fuel when the carb bowl is full.
