It is all according to what shut off valve you have. On my 1949N I open the valve two full turns and when It runs out of gas I can open the valve full open and have one gallon in reserve. On my 1950 with a replacement valve there is no reserve. You have to pull the valve out and check it to be sure.

John is right, in 50+ years the valve could have been replaced several times or the tube and screen on top may be partially clogged or altered. So, one way to see what you have is to disconnect the fuel line and see how far you have to open it before fuel starts to run. Let it run into a can until it stops and see if there is anything left in the tank. Then see how many turns it takes on the valve for fuel to start running again. I think one inch of fuel in the tank is a little less than one gallon of reserve.

Your tractor manual will tell how far to open the valve for main and how far for standby or reserve.

The valve needs to be clean and in working order. The whole deal is there is a short standpipe that you normally feed through until gas gets low enough to not feed. Then you follow the instructions to access the last two gallons.

I think my 2N had the instructions on the VALVE KNOB.

Good luck, duey
