Have rebuilt a Ford 2N and have only used it
apprx. 30hrs. It has had 2 new 12volt coils
since rebuild. Even has a resistor in place.
I am using Tisco coils. Have generator on tractor.
Any suggestions??? Would like to be able to put
tractor to use. It is a 1942 model.

Is the generator a 6 volt.Better check the voltage applied to the coil when the engine is running.

Satcher, Read Jack-Illinois Post's & Diagram, He has it "Right" for the 12V (2.5 Ohm Coil)

You need a OEM BAllast Resistor followed by a second "Fixed" ignition Resistor of near 1.0 Ohm (slightly less is OK)

Your Coil will be very HAPPY, unless you leave the KEY-ON.

The Tisco conversion I have came with the wiring diagram to use the original (A9NN12250A)assembly and the resistor they supplied (8NE10306) wired in series with each other. The coil had a little 12V sticker on it. So far no problems with mine in the 3 or so years it has been on. What I am saying is you need 2 resistors and am not sure by your post that you have both.

WOW... They sent a "12-Volt" voil and also said to use TWO resistors ahead of it... that's WEIRD!

Hey Bob.. my bet is the flyspec priont onthat coil says 'for 12v with external resistance'... IE a 6v coil.... go figure.

I bought the whole kit - alternator and all and had instructions for 2N/9N and also 8N Here is the 2N/9n if it turns out big enough to read

I wonder with the front distributor coil if you aren't better off with something like the original 6-volt setup with a variable resistor. Good hot spark to get her started but then ignition resistance goes up to save the coil.

The more bullet-proof fix that I like for the front distributor coil problems is to remove the guts from one of your burned out coils and bring the wires out to a round can coil like was used on the late 8N.

Satcher..... ..how do you know??? its killing 12-volt coils??? did you check with a calibrated sparkie tester??? Take ennyol'sparkie and bend the side electrode out for a full 3/16" gap and see iff'n yer sparkies will jump the gap with blue-snot authority???

Me? based upon yer sketchy description, I'm more likely to GUESS its yer weaksister ignition switch ($10, cheap) causing you to think yer coil is responsible for your weak sparkies and burned out ignition coil.

PROVE ME WRONG, replace yer weaksister ignition switch..... ..Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

I checked spark plugs with screwdriver and test light. Coil was getting fire to it, but not to plugs. Put new coil own her, she fires up. This is 3rd coil. It has NAPA resistor on it(new also)
I may try going back to 6 volts. Engine has total
rebuild(crank/pistons/rods/oil pump/brgs/gaskets/ etc. May also strip wiring off and rewire again

Sactcher..... ...PROVE ME WRONG, you can not test sparkies with a screwdriver and test lite. MAKE THE DANG SPARKIE CALIBRATOR like I explained. Iff'n yer sparkies won't jump a 3/16" gap, you got weak sparkies most likely by yer weaksister ignition switch ($10, cheap) don't argue, PROVE ME WRONG. Tester first, then change yer weaksister ignition switch and tester again, PROVE ME WRONG!!!..... .respectfully, Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-mister

is yuur genny a 6 or 12 volt? and is your system 6 or 12 volt? you might try pulling the coil and strech the little spring pig tail at the bottom, they sometime dont make good contact with distributor. also these electrical parts are very cheaply made and sometime will and sometime wont.buying new doesnt allways mean they are good. What kind of resistor are you using?
