Seems like I remember it being mentioned that early 8N steering boxes should be filled with corn head grease instead of 90w oil. Where do I get corn head grease. How much do I need. Is it expensive. How do I get it in the steering box.

Thanks.

A question re this topic. I have a suction gun I use in cleaning the oil filter bowl. Should I use it to remove the gear oil in the steering box before putting in 2 tubes of corn head grease? Thanks. Angelo

Angelo..... ..dunno iff'n you can gitt yer suction gun tube thru the secret little right-angle bottom of bolt-hole fill'em-up on the rightside gearbox over yer right-toe. (you doubt? check with "J"-hooked piece of bailin'wire)

I just removed the leftside plate with the gearmesh adjusting screw (leaver'lone) and let the steering gearbox goop drain/spurgle down the side of the tranny housing. Bitt of moppin'up and yer set to refill with much better and thicker cornhead oil. Which can be squeezed thru the secret fill'em-up bolthole using a "zerk" headed bolt (modified) and yer standard big-tube greasegun. Because the cornhead oil is sticky and thick, it don't eazily leak and really lubes the weaksister upper steering gearbox bearing.

tip: leave yer cornhead oil tubes laying out in HOT-SUN before squeezin'..... .Dell

I got it at a JD dealer. They had it sitting right on the shelf. No surprise, it's called "Cornhead Grease". I paid $3/tube.

I put a zerk in the gear box, the zerk replaced the existing plug. The zerk I got is a 90 degree, which works for me. I guess they moved that plug around during the years on the steeering box, so you may need a straight one, or a 45degree, depending.

Where do you add oil or grease? Can't seem to find any kind of plug or fitting.

Check your owners manual, page 212 ( so so )

Check yourford service manual, page 11 ( good )

Check your I&T FO-4 service manual, page 10 ( same as owners manual ).

Don't have any of those manuals? Why not.. they are pretty cheap compaired to the price of your N.. get em, AND the MPC and be prepaired for most of the minor maintenance, adjustment and small repair questions that come up.

I ordered some stuff from him also - it has been a few weeks with no stuff... The check cleared my bank some time ago. I am not to the worrying stage yet - but I would sure like to hear from someone who bought something from him to actually get something. A few more have grumbled that they keep being told it was shipped, but nothing so far.

Well, the guy just lives about 45 minutes from me. The check cleared the bank early last week. I'm not yet to the stage of worrying yet either. But I need to do some mowing.

Poo

I always use the stuff in gear boxes that are old and seep out the gear lube. That stuff will not seep out and takes care of the lube. It is what it is designed for.

Stop in at the place with all the combines sitting out in front and the leaping deer sign and grab all you want off the shelf.

I have about a 2 1/2 inch long needle adapter that I scre onto the end of the gun/s metal tube and squirt it in there.

It's not limited to just the early ones. Even ones that are rebuilt can use it... it is sticky, yet flows to fill cavities and voids.. think of it like a super thick oil.

Cornhead grease is a JD offering.

Not expensive.

Fill the same way you add gear oil.. or add a zerk-headed bolt.. etc..

Sounds easy enough to me. I think there is a JD store over in Chattanooga. If not I know there is one in McMinnville.

Thanks for the info.

By the way.. ANY 0# grease will work. I know my CNH dealer sells some rhino equipment that uses a pourable grease. Some golf course equipment dealers also use tubes of 'thick oil' 0# type grease products and similar..

That's when you take a 7/16 soft gr2 bolt and mount it in your drill press vice, dimple the head in the center with a punch, and then drill it straight thru, and then tap the head with threads to fit whatever zerks you have on hand.. add the zerk, and then screw that bolt in. This works for the late style boxes for sure.
