Why are they called Radius Rods? Are they actually formed on a radius? I always thought they were straight, but I begin to wonder lately...

Could it be because they were designed to pivot outward in an arch when you adjusted the front wheel distance by extending the axle(?)

OK, are they supposed to be straight, or bent in a slight radius bend?

Straight. They only have the bend of you make contact with the front wheels to an immovable object while moving. Usually, the kingpin and bushing are worn and allow the axle to pivot downward when this happens and it bows the radius rods.

Being newly developed, they had to call the something, do you have a better choice? Why is a pencil called a pencil or a nail a nail. Just what it was named.

Just a guess, but the later style after the 9n I beam is a formed structure with two radiused edges instead of square. It the two other sides were not flat, we would be calling them round rods. :-)
ENJOY...

They're called "radius rods" because that's the common nomenclature for such steering/suspension items. The rod reaches out to the front axle "radially" from the footpeg mounting point, and they perform the function of rods.

They're NOT just used on N's... in reply to gahorN, 05-22-2007 20:56:59
As Ga says, they are a generic suspension component.
