Based on all the info I have it looks like I should be using GL1 In my 9N, however, I've looked around and haven't been able to find it. Lots of product that says it's equivelent but I'm not to confident; Finally, the guy who has been working on my tractor ( 30 Plus years of experience ) says GL5 is the right product. Any words of wisdom from you? Thanks GLC

The most respected maintenance manual for the N-Fords (I&T FO-4 manual) recommends common 80W90 GL-5.

If it's gl4/5 it needs to be yellow metal safe.. preferably.

Where does it say that at. I just checked the sections on maintenance, rear end, hydraulics, and transmission, and found no mention of GL-5 anywhere. I did find 90w EP for temps above 32 degrees and 80w EP for temps below 32 degrees. And I found mention of 134d fluid. But that was it. All of this was in the section on maintenance.

I bought mine at Wal-Mart. That was a couple of years ago so I don't know if they still carry it.

TSC has GL-1, Traveller brand. GL-5 will work if it says 'yellow metal safe' on the label. The fluid should be determined by operating temps; if you use GL-1 in the winter in a cold climate, you will need to heat the pump w/ a torch! I use Ford/NH mc-134 year around here in VA.
