Because you guys know everything, and I'm on the brink of calling and waking up the Maytag repairman, I gotta ask. Old set of Maytag W & D, I have kept in prime shape for 20-odd years, but lately, after sitting in the same spot for 10 years, the washer has started to walk across the room unless she sets it to slow spin. I flipped it and looked/cleaned it and replaced the tub holding springs, cause that is about the only thing I could see that would hold/balance it. Is the transmission or motor suspect in this symptom? All the info I can google wants me to beef up the floor, I don't think that is it. I did put the W & D on anti-vib pads like my compressor site on, helped a bit, but still wants to walk on fast spin.

Your washer has three pads under the tripod called "damper pads". Grab the top of your agitator and move the tub back and forth, should move freely, if not you need to replace your pads. Maytag part # 203956

If the washer has a tripod base under the tub, there is a sleeve that it sets on. It never needs lubricating, it is supposed to be dry. If it looks like a lot of white powder in that area, the part is worn. It is not an easy item to replace. It isnt much of a part, but it is necessary to make it work right. The Kenmores do need lubing sometimes but not the Maytags. But, the issue of a weak floor is a common problem. It doesnt have to weaken very much to cause problems. Just my 2 cents worth.

Danny & Soundguy impress me....my wife says I am incapable of operating indoor equipment. And, that very little gets done outdoors that does not involve a gasoline engine.

I think you are on the right track with lubeing the anti-vibration section.Clean that if you can get to it and use a real lube instead of WD40.I had a Whirlpool made kenmore that got to dancing and I pryed the hinged top up and found the spring loaded friction pad was dry.Cleaned and lubed and all was cured. Some whirlpool made kenmore have a round bottom that fits in a(saddle) and also gets dry and needs lube to correct the dancing.CENTAUR

Ramrod,

I have a Kenmore that does the same thing sometimes. On mine there is a damping spring on the tub. When mine starts to walk, the bolt that holds this sping has come out. Its a pain to take the cover off but easy to put the bolt back in with Locktite on it.

About the olny things i have seen to make them walk was from an unballanced load.. either int he tub.. or the mount for the tub is wallod / has play.. allowing the load to slump in one place vs spreading evenly out. That or the feet are not adjusted to correct height..
