Don't know if this may be of use, but I reviewed my 1948 N battery record. I bought the N in 4/70 from a Deere dealer, who'd taken it in trade. First battery replacement 1/29/78, (probably Sears); next 12/22/83 (Wards); next 4/23/93 (Interstate Workaholic); next (current one; still OK) 4/27/06 (Interstate Workaholic). Regularly serviced with distilled water, kept posts and connections clean' replaced the voltage regulator once and had the generator rebuilt once. Always ran it some even in winter months (California) to keep it charged. Moderate use on our 5 acres. Angelo

I have a Sears (not Diehard) in my 55 Chev 2 ton 6 cyl. that was bought 9-12-94 and last week it started the truck easily. In the summer I put it in my 36 Massey swather and then in the truck the rest of the year. This a 42 month battery--why it still works is a good question.

Had to change the battery in the Case Diesel that Daddy had, finally found the date scratched in the top, it was just over 10 years old. I could put the charger on it about 4 months ago and it would crank.. Finally died, same time as the 8 year ole one in the Town car..

I believe it is a good idea to replace the battery in any vehicle before they have a chance to get into an end-of-life mode.

Why? When the battery actually fails, it can often mess up the alternator and/or voltage regulator. The 6-volt generator system in my 8N is a good bit sturdier than an alternator, but I will still replace the battery in a couple of years even if it is still working. Unexpected failures just suck.

I usually buy 60-month batteries and replace them when they are 4 to 4.5 years old. The last 60-month battery I bought was $35, Cheap. A premium battery might last a couple years longer but stretching the life as long as possible does not seem like a good bet to me when I am risking the hassle of a sudden failure and damage to other parts. I buy mid-range quality batteries on sale and replace them before they have a chance to leave me stranded somewhere.

This same philosophy applies to things like tires, hoses, belts, etc. Should I replace the hoses now, or let them go another year and risk having to replace the cylinder head?

My 2-cents

You guys have got me beat. The battery in my 1951 N is April 2000. You are correct about longevity being improved by proper maintenance. I keep all the batteries charged over winter when the tractors do not get a lot of use.

The 12 volt DieHard on my 8N was purchased in May 0f 1999 (I date stamp all my batteries upon installation so I know the age). I am suprised it is still working. One of these days when I need it most it will probably die on me. I may replace it this fall before winter just because. Philip.

Angelo:

That's a good record.

Unlike many things storage battery longevity has improved over the years. The Diehard (for a Honda Civic) in my Kubota diesel is nearly 10 years old and, though showing signs, I was still able to start it last winter to plow snow.

Using only distilled water and charging them every 4-6 weeks when not in regular use makes a big difference in service life.
