My 8n is making a grinding noise when I do an intial left or right turn. I believe my spring and top column bearing are worn out. I am attempting to remove the steering colunm, with every botl/nut rusted what a job. I decided to go after the spring and need to remove the steering wheel. This thing will not budge, even with a puller. Any tricks I need to use. Thanks all. SoMitch

This is an old thread, but I have a 9N from which I was trying to remove the steering wheel.

It would not work with a puller, so 10 mins ago i came in, looked on this forum, went out put the nut on 3-4 turns, doused it with WD-40, whacked the nut several times with just a hammer from all different dirtections and just pulled it off with my hands. Didn't have to use a second hammer and probably spent 1 minute or 2 banging it.

if it's on that tight; the ONLY easy way to get it off is with a puller. It took me 2 days to get my steering wheel off even WITH a puller. I have some photos of the puller etc. if yer interested; email me.

To remove the steering wheel from the Ford tractor you should loosen the acorn nut till there are about 4 threads still holding it on. Soak the area of the spline for a few hours with a good penetrant.

Hold one hammer of about four pounds or larger on one side of the steering wheel center hub and with another hammer of at least two pound strike the hub of the steering wheel as close to directly across from the back up hammer as possible. Move all the way around the hub whacking it with the smaller hammer. This is called swaging the metal. What you are doing is stretching the inside diameter of the hub to allow you to remove the wheel.

Sometimes it is easier to do this with a second person or use all three of your hands if you can’t find help. :O)

It may also be helpful to use a piece of steel shaft to reach outside the circle of the steering wheel so you can get a better whack at the hub with the smaller hammer.

Get yourself up into the seat of the tractor and grasp the steering wheel with both hands and while pulling back with all your might rock the steering wheel back and forth to the left and right pretty forcefully. This process will usually get the wheel to come back to where the nut catches it. You should be able then to finish removing the nut and the wheel will come on off once it has moved a bit.

Be sure not to try this unless the retainer nut is partially on the steering shaft or you may wake up on your back on the ground behind the tractor wondering how you got there.

Mitch..... ..this problem has been asked and answered many times; you might want to check the "archives" at the TOP of the page of this great N-Board.

But for you special..... .you JERK the steering wheel with the acorn nut loosely ON....or....you'll fall-off backwards when the HUB finally releases. Several days of "loosen-oil" on the hub never hurt 'nuttin' nether. Jerk HARD, uppsie-downsie...lefty-righty, itt'll POP eventually.

DO NOT USE "hub-puller" 'cuz the SOFT steering shaft will EXPAND and you'll NEVER gitt'chur acorn nut to fit the rare 11/16-20 thread of the shaft..... ..Dell

I will keep trying, penetrating oil, hammer, and brute force..... I did look at the archives Dell. Good advice. Sometimes it just seems easier to ask the questions and go about your day and check back for replys. I found a lot of helpful information. Thanks again and I'll keep trying till she pops.
