Ok, I removed the hood and all other parts to get the steering shaft housing off.
What I have left is this on page 51 of the parts manual: spring, upper seal, seat, but no upper bearing(part number 3517). It was not lost either...just wasn't there. I found some metal pinched in between the sector shaft gears. Could that be part of the bearing? Can I just pull the lower housing assembly off the tractor or did some of it fall inside the tractor gear case? How do you take the column out of the steering housing without dropping the bearings?(Pull the pitman arms out?) There is a lot of shims there...may 1/8 worth(about 9 and different sizes). I almost got it but need some help folks.
Thanks

The bearings (good ones) have a metal retainer that holds the rollers. They should not fall out with a good bearing. I would take the whole case off the tractor and clean it out with solvent (I use fuel oil) Check the lower bearing as it may be shot from having metal particles fall in it and grind around. There is also a welch plug (like a freeze plug) in the bottom that was out of mine. This let the grease work out the bottom and down into the clutch housing.

ok, thanks jack.
So i half to remove the sector shafts(i'll leave them on the pitman arms)and then pull the steering shaft out. I guess I'll have to have th wife hold the ball and shaft nut assembly so that it doesn't spiral off.
What do you guys think of putting a grease fitting in the upper housing to pump grease in there also???

Art..... .I knew yew cold do it..... .you write..... "What do you guys think of putting a grease fitting in the upper housing to pump grease in there also???"..... .surprizingly enuff, during the last year of 8N production, Ford semi-did that. They added a hard-to-gitt-too 1/4" screw in the steering column under the steering wheel where it is "blocked by the dashpanel. Clever these engineers, eh?

Later 100-series tractors, Ford drilled a weep-hole just above the WELD that attaches the hollow steering gear shaft to the BALL-NUTT shaft, and you could actually "top-up" yer steering gearbox oillevel by pouring gearoil down the tube after removing the acorn nut. Clever these engineers, eh?

Its yer tractor, do what seems appropriate to you.

We recommend the use of sticky corn-head oil from John Deere instead of gearbox oil. Why? It don't LEAK and you can OVERFILL yer steering gearbox thru the pipe-plug so yer upper bearing (the missing one) stays lubricated all the time. two-tubes $5 (cheap) Simple, eh?..... ..Dell

Dell-

My 8n has that 1/4" screw just below the steering wheel. I was wondering what it was for the other day. I guess I'll try to figure a way to get some grease in there. Gonna do the cornhead grease thing anyway - from the looks of things most of the oil has seeped out and is now doing a fine job lubricating OUTSIDE of the steering assembly.

This board is great. Questions answered before they're even asked!
