Fried brake anyone?

My 8N was running fine today when I backed up rather quickly. I put the left brake on hard (klutch was already engaged). When I resumed going forward, I heard a squeak. About ten to twenty minutes later, I realized the left brake was still down as if my foot was pressing down. I realized some how the brake was still engaged possibly. The odd thing was I did not feel any pull and the tractor did not try to turn (with left tire "braked"). When I got back to the front, I prepared to wash the tractor off (very muddy today). I touched the outside of the wheel and the brake drum. The outside wheel was hot....the inside drum was almost too hot to hold a hand to for long. Here is where I may have boo-booed....as I was washing the tractor down, I sprayed some water on the wheel and drum. A light steam...very light came off the wheel. Realizing I had a real problem, I started the tractor and was going to move it a few feet to park. The left wheel would not turn in forward gear (as if brake was engaged). It would turn in reverse? I backed up the tractor a few feet and put the cover on it. Can anyone offer their thoughts on what happened?

Need to take the wheel and the hub off.

May have dropped a brake spring.
