my 1 1/8 pto shaft that sticks out of the back of the tractor just snapped off with only parts of the spline left sticking out. but if you look in the center there is original red paint. so did the actual shaft break or just a spline end that is attached to it. what are the minimum list of parts that i need to order to fix this and would just assume upgrade to 1 3/8 while at it if not alot more

The red paint can only be there if:

The shaft had a center drilled into it for support when the factory cut the spline on it. The shaft would have been exposed when the tractor was painted at one time. The end that snapped off wasn"t as deep as the center drill leaving painted metal exposed.

The other option would be that the shaft was cracked before it was painted and the paint found it"s way down the crack. The would leave a painted area after the end failed.

The repair options center around replacement of the shaft and possibly the bearing and the seal. Most guys suggest going to the 1-3/8" shaft which is swapping out the entire assembly. Should be about $130.00 and you will need the correct size ORC for the new shaft.

One suggestion that worked for me was: Park your tractor on an incline with the front end pointing down, rear end (PTO) up. This way you don't have to drain the fluid. Simple but useful hint. I seem to remember that there is a spring lock washer that was a bear to get off and replace, had to use a lot of umphhhh.

I've never heard of one being pushed in, or of new shafts twisting (unless they're abused, like running a brushhog with a frozen slip clutch or hardened shear bolt). I replaced the pto shaft in my Jubilee several years ago, and no problems since.

look at the archives there are subjects from some of the prominate helpers here that say the new shafts twist and how you have to torch them off inside the transmission in front of the pump because the wont pass through it because of the twist

Did the shaft snap, or maybe the ORC? Is/was there a big assembly on there before, maybe the size of an oil can? If that has blown, you can simply replace that. How much shaft is left sticking out of the back of the tractor?

You need the pto shaft, bearing/seal/retainer, and gasket. Often available as a kit. Not too expensive, and a pretty easy, straight forward repair. Definatly step up to 1 3/8".

If you don't have a service manual, it would be helpful to get one. They're worth the money. (I have about half a dozen for my various tractors.) If I remember right, the end of the pto shaft had a pilot hole in it. The red paint was probably in that. Or it could have been on a part of the shaft that wasn't subject to wear, and was covered by grease/oil. To replace the pto shaft, point the nose downhill or drain the oil. Then remove the 4 bolts that hold the bearing retainer to the rear housing. The retainer, bearing, and pto shaft can then be pulled out. Reassemble in reverse order, and remember to use a new gasket between the bearing retainer and rear housing.

i do believe that there is a pilot hole in it but its flush with the outside of the cover is there room for the shaft to slide forward that far i am at work and cant look at it right now but if its stil usable i dont want to put a new soft twistable shaft in it if avoidable
