have been looking for answer to how my output shaft could break off and have a nice factory red painted end with center dimple left that obviously did not break off it had a 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 sleeve on it. All i can think is the sleeve stripped off and the shaft somehow pushed inside the tractor it is now flush. is there some kind of retaining clip that stops this. It didn't look like there was anything but dirt in the end of the female pto shaft i am at work now but tonight i will try to pull shaft and look wanted to order parts first but if the shaft is good i am not going to replace

I changed my 1 1/8 to a 1 3/8 so as to make it compatible with most of the pto equipment. When rotary mowing heavy brush (hardwood) the pto would pull out the back of the housing. I backed up the wimpy inside bearing retained snap ring with a bearing lock collar, no problems since. I'm told another reason for pulling pto shafts out is the drive shaft to the equipment is not lubricated and sliding easily. Long story short, since the upgrade cost was about $100 (cheap), I kept my old 1 18 shaft for posterity and went the user friendly route.

I had an 8N once that had the back half of the PTO bearing housing broken off. How? I have no idea.

The pto shaft could slide in, but not out.

You are right, there are supposed to be TWO retainers in the housing, one to keep the shaft etc., from coming out, and one to keep everything from going in.

I thought I was the only one that had that crazy problem, glad to know I am not alone :0).
