pulled the shims out and measured the stack. had .085", well the book called for .050" thick. i reduced until i had the right pull on the steering wheel and no sector shafts installed. final thickness was .061" for the correct tension on the steering wheel. then added left sector shaft with notch towards bottom. added 1 hole of countclockwise rotation and bingo! correct tension on steering wheel.
added second sector shaft and rotated clockwise for tension and bingo! NO SLOP 'CEPT BOUT 1.25"
good enough. then when i dropped the tractor down i find i need bearings on both verticle spindles. that's what was causing the draglink bolts to rub on the radius arms.
off to get them now. just thought i would let everyone know it is done now.
thanks again for the input and sorry if i didn't email back but i was swamped.

Good luck removing those old bushings from the spindles. I always have to cut and collapse them to get them out. I find that if I can find the seam and drive a small chisle down behind it, the bushing will fold in on itself and I can remove it. Don't know a better way...
