While I was in the process of scraping my gas tank earlier this evening, I started to wonder if I should paint it or not when I do my rebuild. I have read that oringinal 8N gas tanks were NOT painted, but I have seen some rebuilds that were painted. As I scraped the build up crud off my gas tank I discovered some clean looking metal underneath.

I used cold galvanizing paint in spray cans. It replicates the original cad color reasonably well and can be repaired easily with a brush. I've spilled gas on the galvanized material after it dried a month and it didn't faze the color.
Easy and cheap!
If you want to make it shiny like the original, you can buff it. Make sure you have several coats and let it dry well. You'll be amazed at how well it shines.
Different brands of galvanized turn out different colors. The CRC brand looks good to me.

I have 2 late model 8Ns and neither is painted and they don't look like they ever were. It would be interesting to see how many were or were not painted since one of the replies says that their 49 was factory painted.

Thanks for tips. When it comes time to paint the metal, I believe the tank will be painted as well. I cleaned it off a little more last evening and although most of the top is mint, the bottom shows some staining that would not look good without being painted. I will follow advice on using gas resistent paint.

I paint those and battery boxes/hold downs with truck bed liner in rattle cans from WalMart. That stuff covers well, looks good, and is tough as nails. Gas is no problem to it.

I"ve sand blasted and painted three. Used PPG (now Porter Paint)aquapon two part epoxy light gray paint. Gas does not seem to effect. It will stain a little if you don"t wipe off spills after filling.

I've painted 2 and used hardener in the paint. They seem to be fairly resistant to the gas

I painted mine when I had it apart. It looked a lot better and was a lot cleaner to put back together. But I made the mistake of using cheap spray paint the first time I filled it gas ate the paint off near the cap. Use a good paint and it will be fine.

According to the best information I have been able to find, the original gas tanks were cad plated.

Many tanks have been replaced or patched and refinished over the years because of rust. Some replacement tanks may have been painted.
