I finally got my steering box fixed. Found a left side sector shaft on ebay for $35. Got it installed and mowed yesterday and today. Still need to adjust it some. I stopped today and got one tube of corn head grease to add some to the steering box.

How do I get this stuff in the steering box. I have heard of the zerk bolt I can make. But where does it go. Which side is the filler plug on. Is it easy to access. How much grease do I add to the box.

Sure am glad to have my tractor back in service.

Thanks.

poo

I have not filled my N box yet, but on other boxes I have used a 1 1/2 needle fitting and squirted the warm stuff in the oil fill hole. It would take about one shake down cruise and then I could get it topped off to the correct oil level.

One thing I found is that it seems to expand some under heat and if a box is full full some will be eventuall forced out the easiest avenue. found this out on my JD steering box.

As far as mixing, the original spec oil was OK right. Now we are adding corn head grease. They will mix well and be happy. If you are doubtful, mix up a batch and let it set until your next birthday and notice if it is still happy.

It works for me and a pile of other guys. Some folks do the witches brew thing and mix gear oil with regular grease until it satisfies them. Me I go with the corn head tube because I think it has some kind of tacky addatives.

"Add grease till it starts coming out at the steering wheel."

I can do that. I was wondering how I would know when I got enough.

The box still has a lot of grease in it. So I figured I would only need one tube at most.

I don't have the serial number at hand but it is an early model 8N steering box.

Thanks.

Pooh..... ..how did'ja change yer sector gear without cleanin' out the old oil/greese???

Clean-itt again, 'cuz you really don't want to be "mixxin" greese & oil. Then use 2-tubes of that sticky cornhead greese. Thats all you need..... ..Dell

It already had corn head grease in it. I just pulled the left side sector shaft off and left most of the grease in the box. Some leaked out while it sat there waiting to be put back together. I cleaned that up and reached in and cleaned off the teeth of the other gear and ball nut so I could line up the teeth on the new shaft. So now I just need to top it off with grease. And I need to adjust it properly. but I needed to mow real bad today so I did that first. Steering felt a little tight so I think I need to back the gear off a little. Or it could be I've forgotten how hard it was to steer. I'll check it out before I do any more with it.

Pooh..... ..the early 49 8N (before s/n 216989) steering gearbox is...would you believe?.....a squarehead plumbing plug above yer right toesie???

And you need 2-TUBES of that sticky cornhead greese. use a regular greezegun or caulking gun. tip: lett'chur tubes set out in HOT SUNSHINE so it sqeezes eazier.

There is a "zerk" fitting that fits that 1/4" pipe fitting on side of yer early steering gearbox. go shopping..... ...Dell

poo, whats your serial #? i got an early 49 also.
anyway, go back to the john deere dealer and buy one of those zerk fittings to replace your pipe plug on the right side of your lower steering housing. remove the steering wheel to let air out as you pump 2 or 3 cans or corn head grease in there. i just got done going through mine and i have excellent steering compared to before.
whats that serial number on yours?

On the right side of the box.. just above the round sectoer cover is an oil level plug, as identified by the manual.

I'm not sure of the thread on that early box.. . On the later box it is 7/17 bolt thread...

If nothing else you can put a needle or nozzle adapter on the GG and pump er full.. best bet is to adapt a zerk to a plug that fits.. it's pretty easy to make if you have a drill and thread tap. I'd pump till I get lube coming out under the steering wheel. If the box is empty.. it may take shy of 2 tubes. if there is oil already in there.. see what ya get..

A tad smaller than 7/16 ( grin ).. which is what should have been there... ( big fingers and fast typing don't always mesh... )
