49 8n just rebuilt.
ok, runs good but i get the intermittent poot out the exhaust. main jet 1 turn out. idle jet 1 1/4 turn out. no loss of power under load what so ever.
if idle air is turned out it LEANS the carb, correct? so i should turn it in to richen it until the poot goes away? all this with a warm engine by the way, correct? if i turn it in all the way and it still poots then what? carb has been overhauled already.

Art..... .remember the M/S idlemix is BASSACKWARDS; out fer lean; IN fer ENRICH.

Yer quoting 1-1/4 turn side-pointing idlemix. That is way too-lean unless yer carb-rebuild skills is like yer carb-adjusting skills.

Fer reference purposes, my eazy starting 6-volt 8N will idle at an empressingly slow 400rpms, and the side-pointing idlemix is 1/4-turn. Then down-pointing mainjet is 2-turns. Yers should be similar.

Identifying most pootty-poots is an exersize in futility 'cuz theres so many causes and it don't hurt 'nuttin' ennyways..... ...respectfully, Dell

I think the worst thing ever happened to an old Ford tractor is their owner/operators got to drive "modern" equipment with computer controlled fuel injection and high energy ignition sytems...

Suddenly, we all want these old beast to run like our 50 - 60 year newer equipment does. You know, never miss a beat & perfect mixture ratio at all speeds and altitudes.

These tractors run pretty well for something that replaced the HORSE.

Not fair to compare... if it runs and works, let it be. Be content, don't set the expectation too high, this is ancient technology.... durable, but ancient.

My thoughts, duey

Check that your points aren't slipping. After a tune-up mine ran great for 7 hours then developed the poot-poot. Eventually lost power and limped back to the garage. If your points have slipped get two new #8-32 x 3/16 screws and some of those star shaped lock washers.

Idle jet in to enrich.

Any chance the ptto you hear every now and then isn't a valve or ignition problem?

Run some MMO in your gas.. heck.. atf fluid probably work fine and be cheaper... run a good mix in your next tank.. and if you are close to an oil change.. run some in your crank oil just enough to warm things up, then drain and refill as normal.. see what ya get..

Especially on new-to-me.. or rebuilt carbs.. i always run some mmo in the gas plus one of those bottle of gas tank carb cleaner treatments.. in case I left a little piece of varnish or something.. the gas treatment will usually catch minor stuff.. plus any water that may have settled inthe tank.. and the MMO won't hurt anything and adds some upper lube that the valves won't mind either..

Good time to check plugs and plug wires.. a bad plug/ wire will cause a missfire now and then.. same as a bad distrib cap that has a crack or carbon tracks... etc..

marvel mystery oil. hhhmm. well, i just changed the points cuz i had extras. front mounts suck but once you understand them, they're ok. anyway, they are dead on and tight. still the poot. i read an article:>Link

if>Link one can decifer this advanced terminology, i think the answer may be there.

i will not add anything to the engine oil. it only has 8 hours on it. very little valve noise so i don't think they are way out of adjustment.
i think i will play with the idle screw some and see if i can get it to richen up and get rid of the poots.

I doubt that screw will get you much for the reasons stated in this thread.. but it sure won't hurt you much to fiddle with it.
