What is the purpose of the cut out and how do I repolarize as Dell recommends? Also, is it OK to jump start the beast with a 12 volt through the starter. Thanks for the help.

Ron..... ...gitt'out chur I&T FO-4 repair manual. It is all explained in there for you and it even has pictures for word challenged newbies.

The cut-out is BOTH a voltage sensitive relay and a direction of current flow magnetic field relay. It has 2-windings. Isn't that amazing?

It disconnects the generator from the battery when the engine stops and the genny stops ginnin'. Iff'n it didn't cut-out (disconnect) the genny would discharge yer battery overnite. Then ya'd be pizzed in the morning wouldn't you???

Becareful, theres a wrong-way and a correct-way to connect the roundcan cut-out. Usually the cut-out 2-terminals are labeled. A for Armature (genny) B for Battery. B-usually goes thru the ammeter before it gitts to the battery. Why? so you can tell iff'n yer battery is charging or discharging. Wadda concept!!!

Only problem with using the cut-out, is you need to personally "POLARIZE" the cut-out to what ever yer battery grounding polarity is. I use a pair of pliers handles to "arc-spark" the cut-out terminals, you can use bailin'wire or barbed'wire, engine OFF. Simple, eh?

Iff'n you need to "jump-start" yer engine. Connect one-jumper to the starter motor stud, then GROUND the other jumper to convenient ground. I usually use one of them roundy-round steering arms because it is convenient. Surprizingly, yer starter motor don't care, positive or negative BATTERY, starter still turns the correct direction.

DO NOT JUMP 12v direct to yer 6-volt battery 'cuz yu'll EXPLODE BATTERY ACID into yer eyeballs. Not good..... ....Dell, the self-appointed safety preacher

The cutout disconnects the battery from the generator at shut down or (HOPEFULLY) any time the generator is NOT charging.

This prevents the battery from being "drained", and protects the generator from having all it's smoke let out.

A simple site search for "Dell, polarizing" will turn up nearly 1000 posts on how to do it.

NO need to type it out one more time!
