PTO quit, what should I look for?

I am a newbie to 8Ns so any help is appreciated. Last night I was mowing and the PTO started sporatically disengaging. Later it quit altogether. I can tell that when I flip the PTO lever it does engage but the shaft out the rear isn't turning. Its like something is broke out back.

What should I look for? Thanks

Is there on ORC (Overrunning Clutch) slipped onto the PTO shaft, ahead of the mower's front PTO coupler?

If so, the ORC make have failed internally.

offroadr..... ...heres a pic of ORC (over runing coupler) very necessary for N-Tractors PTO's driving brushhoggs. Without the ORC, everytime you clutch to slowdown to go around the barncorner, powerpole, creekbank, irrigation canel, wifes car (don't ask) all that brushhog blade inertia BACKDRIVES thru the PTO into yer tranny and yer brakes won't slow you. Held on by behind the greeze zerks with springloaded split rollpin. Comes in old 1-1/8F and new 1-3/8F inputs and modern 1-3/8M output ORC $60, cheap..... ..Dell, yer self-appointed ORC SAFETY preacher

Thanks, Dell! in reply to Dell (WA), 06-07-2007 08:02:27
I've taken to heart what everyone has been saying for the past year since I got my 8n, that I need to get an ORC on it. Have been asking questions and was about to buy one. Then you go and post that picture. "Kinda looks familiar," says I. So out I go to have a look and, by golly, I already have one of those puppies on my tractor, exactly like the one you posted. Except that, opposite the grease fitting is a slotted head, rather than the hex head as is in the picture. I have no idea if it is a 'conversion' ORC or if there is a new PTO shaft. The ORC has a bit of slop when you jiggle it, and there a little bit of leak from the PTO seal, but my hydraulic fluid still measures to the 'full' mark on the stick so I guess I am not loosing much. I think I'll just leave it alone for the time being and save the bucks I was going to spend on a new PTO shaft assembly and ORC.
Thanks again!

Grab it and see if it will spin in both directions. It shouldn't.

offroadr..... ..yes, 1-way clutches fail. Remove with hidden rollpin. Remove BOTH greeze zerks and drive out with nail and hammer. Simple, eh?..... .Dell
