OK, I have this 6v pos gnd thing coming together in my head, thanks to a few of my friends. I removed the ner CNH VR and checked it for damage, there was none, so it goes back for exchange, my CNH guys have no problem doing that for me. In the meantime, I put the original VR back on and it provided no surprises. Cranked up GT and observed the ammeter come back up to zero, and a bit to the positive side with a fast idle. The voltmeter shows 6.3 v when it is charging, is that about right? Seems low to me, but I will wait and see what y'all think. I was also pleased to see the temp gauge come up to 160 and the thermostat allow coolant flow after reaching that temp.

6.3v is a low charge.. but then... gennies don't charge at idle.. run it up to pto rpm then recheck.. ideally should be somewhere int he 7v range.

You can also full field it by grounding the field with engine at about 900 rpm.. ammeter should show significant charge..

6.3v is too low. Did you take a measurement at the battery before starting it? Take another on a high rev. There should be a big difference between the two, if not, polorize the generator (short between the ARM and BAT), then test again.

Sounds like you are getting close.
