I have a '46 2N that has a zerk in the top of the steering tube. I've read that the tube dead ends... if so, what is this zerk for?

I understand what grease zerks are "fer"... but it doesn't seem to apply to MY '46 2N. See my new post titled: "Unknown Zerk" findings.

Your "zerk fitting" was actually the "boss" that was drilled and tapped by non-factory personnel.

Like my 9N. The gas tank/battery compartment door now is held by DFZUS fittings.

Hope this helps. John,PA

The NOS cap I purchased from Don B for my 9N had the hole for the fitting right from Ford.

Dan....the caps with the zerk were originally for the 2n.The 9n's didn't have this feature.I think the zerk came out in 1944.However, it was one of Ford's better ideas and will work on all 9-2ns. don b

I think John is misspelling the DZUS fitting, a quarter-turn invention for rapidly takin" things apart. Very useful on panels of aeroplanes that must be removed frequently. Available in a bewildering varity of heads, including the ones that disguise themselves as screws, and some that look like wing-nuts. The US NAVY had "em on a lottsa panels on their aeroplanes. Probably still do. CC

Did my part..... went over to the local depot. Being that there was a local township policeman, who just pulled up in front of my parking spot, I made sure that the young lad saw my credentials, driveing license, for proof of age to purchase smoks. I protected the young salesman for sure. Howevers, in the state of PA, he must be 35 yrs. to sell me any tobacco products. I forgot to ask him for his credentials. He looked 14.l John,PA

Hi Poot; Look on page 108, fig. 164, in your FO-4 man. It will show ya the breakdown of the whole steering gear assembly.
Look at the top cap where the zerk in ??? is. They don't # it but off to the side is a small zerk showing.
My 44, 2N has this also. It's used to grease the top bearing and cone. Just three short bursts from your grease gun should do it. Wipe any exsess grease off and you are good to go, until the next time.
Just like TOH said.

That zerk is put there to keep ya from getting, "The Dreaded Steering Wheel Face", when ya pull your steering wheel off to grease the bearing. LMAO {:-))
