NAA wheel nut question

I'm about to go aout and change the hub on my 54 NAA. I'm trying to salvage the axle but the threads are worn down so much that the nut just slides on them. I have the new 2 piece nut to replace the original so here's the question. The original gets torqued to 450 lbs. Is that just to insure that it doesn't work loose or does it need to put pressure on the hub? I dont think I'll be able to get anywhere near that much torque with this bolt although I'm sure it'll tighten down enough to hold the wheel on. Thanks in advance. Pete

The axle and the hub are both splines with a tapered spline. The taper is what wears down when run loose and causes the hub to push too far back to be able to tighten it up on the spline.

No you will probably not be able to get that much torque on the two piece. (Swaggert) nut. It is something like grade 8 at the most and the original is forged steel and hardness you wouldn't beieve. Just tighten the inside nut till it starts to want to slip and then tighten the outer nut so it squeezes down on the inside nut and tighten it some more alternating till you get it tight as you can without it slipping on the threads. I have used a lot of these nuts and they work.

You need to retighten it several times after working the tractor for an hour or so because it will work the hub up on the axle spline and get loose again till it get tight enough to stay put.

Thanks, Zane, for the information on the hub. I didn't get to it today, started changing out a leaky exhaust system. Would have gone a lot quicker except I'm a clean freak and there was a lot of gunk on the side of the valve cover and the top of the head. I figured now would be the time to clean it while the manifold was off. Any way, time I was finished cleaning it was time to take the missus out to eat. I'll get back to it sometime this week. Thanks again for the help. Pete
