my brother has a 47 2n. the motot was rebuilt a few years ago and runs perfect, purrin kittin.
when ever in gear and going up hill or under load, there is a loud howl and i cannot place it. it seems that it runs from front to back. if you push in the clutch it goes away. i am thinking that possibly it could be the throwout bearing but i don't know. no problems at all with any thing else.
any ideas?
thanks

yes, the rear end oil is up to spec. ok, that rules out the throwout bearing. it howls only under load like up hill. i don't mean much of one either, just a foot or two in elevation over 50 feet. at first, i thought maybe it was in the rear end like a wheel bearing too tight.

I think I know the howl you're talking about . My neighbors 9n does it also . I'm no expert but I believe it could be a carrier bearing in the rear end . Good luck & God bless . Ken

The throwout bearing should only be under pressure when you(push the pedal in)which is disengaging the clutch so you can get the transmission into the selected gear.Once you get your foot off the pedal it should not be doing anything.CENTAUR

Does the howl worsen the longer you use it?

Still sounds like a bearing issus because when the gears are under load the bearing had wear/slack and kets the gear move from its normal operating position.

Kinda like a rearend in an automobile whenunder load it will howl with bad gear/bearing and under coast or unloaded postion the gear will set in ot proper location hence no howl.
