Got a warning lite on my wife's 92 Lexus es300 last nite that the tail lights were not working. I checked and the right side was fine, but all the left side was out. I pulled the both lite assemblys this am and found that there was no power to any of the left tail lites, but the brake lite and turn signal were fine. There is only one fuse to both tail lites and it was good. I traced the loss of power as far into the rear of the car as I could, but could not find where I lost power. So I got a couple of splicers and simply spliced a piece of #16 wire from the hot right lite to the left lite and it works fine. Everything apparently checks out.

But something tells me that there might be a problem with that. I mean, if all that was needed was to tie the two wires together with a short splice, then why didn't Toyota do that instead of running both wires back towards the front of the car someplace where they are apparently tied together anyway. It could have something to do with the warning signal, but I don't think that it discriminates between the right and left rear sides. Can you think of any reason why this simple splice would not work as a permanent fix? Have I missed something? Thanks...Ron

Sometimes these manufactures do strange things to us, but it usually goes back to saving them time on the assembly line. If your sensor has cleared the error, that would mean they picked up the current sensor ahead of your splice. That said, on a 15 year old auto I would call it fixed and drive it.

Your analysis makes sense. Thanks. I had momentarily forgotten that the sensors would let me know if a problem exists and everything is copesetic so tomorrow I am going to put it all back together. Honestly, you have to take the trunk apart just to replace the light bulbs. Ron
