I have a "48 8N with a front mount distributor. Has had a 12v conversion. Just getting this thing going good, but battery isn"t getting charged. Looked hard yesterday and found out that the generator only has one wire coming from it and it goes directly to the neg post on battery. Looks like the generator should have 3 wires coming from it. I really need picture or some kind of detailed diagram to wire it correctly. The generator has two posts and one place for a plug. Please help!

You've written a confusing message with no real facts to go on for us to help you.

You wrote that you have a 12v conversion.. you don't specify if this is an alternator.. or a re-wire 'stealth' genny conversion.

You also say that the wire from the charge device goes to battery negative.. yet you do not tell us the ground polarity. If this is p-ground.. and a alternator.. it is probably smoked.most alts only work with n-ground... if it is n-ground.. it is probably smoked.. as you have the output wired to ground.

Post back with some details so we can help you.

You got an alt or a genny?

what voltage?

regulator internal or external

battery type?

ground plane polarity?

Only one of us here is psychic.. and he hasn't showed up yet this morning..

Since you convered to 12v you should not be using the original 6 volt generator. If you do have a 12 volt generator then you need to get the regulator that matches your generator. Since we do not know what generator you have we cannot tell you what regulator to use or how to wire it.

Iffn you're using a 12 volt alternator then you most likely do not need a (external) regulator since most of the alternator conversions use the delco 10SI with an internal regulator -- they come in either the one wire self exciting type or the three wire type. You need to know which you have.

I will have to look at it later today to find out the type of Generator or Alternator. This is new stuff for me. I didn't do the conversoin and some of the things the guy I bought it from did to the tractor don't make any sense. Thinking about returning to the original 6volt system so that the manual will be more helpful. I am sure there are 3 places for connections; 2 for nut/bolt connection and one for a plug-in wire. I will repost tonight with information on type of Alt/Gen. I don't know anything about the polarity. How do I determine that? If possible, I will send photos along with answers. Thanks.
