I've got about a 40 year old (at least) 5 foot bush hog I use with my 8N. I remember my dad putting what looked like grease in the gear box. This was the same grease he used for the tractor's zerk fittings and would put it in with a grease gun. Thats also whats currently in the gearbox. When I went to buy more the guy at the tractor store said I should use a 90 wt. oil but it looks awful thin compared to whats in there. Was wondering if anyone else familiar with what I need to use.

I'd try a mix of 85/140 and grease if you think the seals are week.. just enough gear lube to make it runny and thick. Cornhead grease as Dean mentions is also an excelent choice.

In gearboxes with good seals.. unless they spec 90w.. I usually like 85/140 for hot florida mowing..

RR:

It is not uncommon for folks to use chassis lube in gearboxes that have worn seals that will not hold 90W. My Father used chassis lube in his 5 foot cutter for over 20 years before I finally replaced the seals.

The chassis lube is not as good a lubricant for either the gears or the bearings as is the EP 90W but it is far better than nothing.

If your seals do not leak too badly you may want to try either JD cornhead grease or the similar CNH equivalent.

I cannot speak for the JD but the CNH product is a high EP lubricant designed for heavy loads. I currently have it in one of my rotary cutters with a damaged input shaft and a speedy sleeve because 90W will come out betwteen the speedy sleeve and the shaft but the CNH lubricant does not.
