I have my 8n generator off. It has three wire connectors. I understand some only had one. As far as I can tell it should work. I would like to do some kind of bench test before putting it back on. I seem to recall that a generator is a sort of electric motor.

Should I be able to power it up and make it spin? All help appreciated

I have been using a charger for years, since I made feeble attempt years ago.

YES.. do a motor test.. most gennies that charge will motor.. most gennies that motor will charge. there ARE exceptions.

Get a battery.. preferably 6v.. though a 12v will do. get a set of jumper cables. get a jumper wire with gator clip ends. hook jumper cables to battery... hook positive cable to genny case ( might be easier to put genny in a vice with minimal pressure.. and then clamp p-jumper cable to vice ). Now hook neg cable up to armature.. which is the terminal by itself ont he back plate of the genny.

Now jumper the 2 side by side posts on the genny barrel. genny should motor.

By the way.. you just polarized it too. If it don't charge after that.. suspect the vr.. ( and post back )

Sound Guy, Zane,

I hooked up to six volt in the sequence, +ground, -armature. It was at that point I was getting some light spaking, nothing more than noticable, as I connected to the back post.

Proceeding further, when I bridged the posts on the side of the barrel it commenced to turning. After I unbridged the two SPs it continued to turn, with just the -EP and + G. I only ran it for a few seconds.

It turned rather slowly300 rpm +/-

This is all very new and interesting to me. There is the slow-fast adjuster that is still functional, humm...

You didn't indicate that this was a 3rd brush genny.. that adjuster is evidence of it.

Reinstall it with adjuster turned up and see what you get.

Soundguy, I put it back on after some more spinnups on the bench.

It is working. The newish battery was not too far down it seems. Giving about 7-8 amps af full throtle according to the gage.

It also appears to try to step up when idled down, then run back up it seems to kick down a bit as speed goes up. Looks like the regulator is working!

How many times have I hooked up a charger over the years. Or, worse left the battery discharged for extended periods.

PLUGS, I was having H10s fouling. Installed some H12s recently. I will be monitoring these for a while and trying to get the mix leaned down according to the color.

I just don't use the ol girl like a real farmer. I do some two bottom plowing in a loop, so as to have the plow in the ground half the time. That is the heaviest pulling it sees. FWIW

H10s are no longer reccommeded for the Ford tractor.H12s are the right heat range.My 600 had h10s when I bought it,much trouble with gas fouling.A set of autolite 437s cured the problem.When you look for new Autolites do not ask for Autolite AL 437 say Autolite 437.The computer and the teenaged clerk wont be able to find them.Champion plugs are made in Mexico now.The shells are breaking off in cylinder heads.Ive had it happen in an olds V8.

Thanks for the alert on the Plugs. I will look for the Autolites. I had been using H-10s and idle set rich to boot.

It would be more likely that the voltage regulator is faulty than the generator. You can put power to the Gen terminal with the Generator ont he tractor and it should motor but this does not necessarily mean it is going to charge.
