8N slipping gears?

Hello,

There's a '49 8N near me for sale. The seller wants $1000 for it. Seller claims it starts and will run without smoking, but when it's put into gear, the tranny slips gears and will lock up.

Since I know nothing about old tractors, is this something worth considering? Thanks in advance for any advice.

since you will have some one do the tranny repair, just figure 8 hundred for that, and 8 hundred for new tires and thats what you will have in it. that is if she dont have any other problems. RP

Is $800 an average price for getting the transmission/gears serviced?

not really, it depends who you take it to, if they are honest, and what the problem is. however to cover yourself from too much risk, its a good number to work from. also there are plenty tractors available without these problems to deal with. RP

ElCidd..... ..call yer local ex-Ford (now called Case New Holland) dealer for a "quote". Simple, eh?

Iff'n ya don't wanna gitt'chur pinkies dirty, then don't buy an OLD TRACTOR, 'cuz dealer mechanics COST. As I said, these tractors were designed for horse farmers, you can operate a computer..... .respectfully, Dell

LOL
Not worried about getting dirty, but I'd like to get the tractor up and running in a quicker amount of time than it would take for me to poke around. I'll call the local Case dealer.

If you can get the tractor rolling and then it tries to lock up you may be looking at the differentail being a problem. Pieces of the cross can become broken or loose and begin to tangle up with the pinion and ring gear. If this has in fact happened it can result in a broken differential housing where the pinion shaft side thrust bearing is housed in the casting. If that place is broken out it is major problem and in the past meant replacing the whole housing since there was no good way to weld it. It is possible today however to have a qualified welder fix it because of the advances in welding tehcniques since the days when I had to replace the whole housing. I have seen this problem repaired by brazing but I have also seen the results of when the brazing fix failed and ruined the ring gear and pinion again.

Hopefully it will be as Dell said and only the shifter needs repaired.

Thanks for the info Dell. I think the tires are probably on there last legs, so I"ve taken that into consideration.

The only reason I"m considering this one, is that most local 8Ns sell for much higher than anywhere else in the nation, lol. All the ones I"ve found locally, in unrestored condition, the sellers are asking at least $2500 - $3200. And that"s for a rough looking, work tractor, not a parade tractor.

I wouldn"t be doing the work on the tractor, I"m hoping to find a shop nearby that could essentially do a tune up on whatever I end up buying. I just didn"t want to buy a lemon.

elcidd..... .notta deal killer; usually some worn shifter notches in the tranny shifter plates. Probably 4-hr fixx-itt time for inexperienced shadetree mechanic. 1-hr at experienced dealer. Yer call.

More important is condition of rest of tractor; 'spechally rear tires ($250ea) Engine hassta really be worn to smoke, so thats good but semi-smoggscreen to newbie. Wanna scarehim? Ask to take engine compression; Ford specs 90psi, min.

Neat thing about ol Ford tractors, parts are reasonable and available. Good runnin N-Tractors with good tires worth about $2500. What is yer mechanicability? Remember, they were designed fer horse farmers, you can operate a computer..... ..Dell
