Downfall of good starting tractor?

Just curious...I know there are dozens of reasons..
...but what would be the main reasons for a good starting tractor to to start misbehaving?
Example...after working on my 9N (including new carb / new starter) it started at touch of key. But week or two later it takes a bit to start. Then another week or two and it's back to won't start.
What would be the main culprits for these downfalls. Battery? My 9N never seems to last very long as a good starting machine Thanks,
Crutch

Your question is hard to answer, as you don't tell us just WHAT the tractor is doing.

Hard to start might mean the starter motor won't turn the motor very well, it might mean you have to crank a long time before it will start, or both.

I've got to agree with Danny, though, that keeping the tractor INSIDE is one of the biggest open secrets to making sure old tractors stay easy to start.

crutch, when that happened to mine, it was old corroded battery cables. changed them out and it was like a engine rebuild. start by cleaning all the wire connections, wire brush any rust-corrosion-paint etc, and tighten. RP

Just a wild guess. If your tractor sits outside, it could be moisture related. There should be gaskets in the distributor to help this. Your gaskets could be missing or defective letting moisture in.

Good luck,
Danny
