I picked up a sickle mower for my 8N [tired of sliding in with the brush hog]to trim the ditches and pond--but it's 7 foot bar lenght is a bit much. Can it be replaced with a 5 foot without much trouble?--PeP in NE Ohio

is 7 foot really too much? I have been searching for a sickle and thought a 7 foot would be ok. What issues are you having with 7foot? is it causing the tractor to lean? if so are your wheels filled or unfilled? Thanks for the info, it may save me some time...

James

The 7 foot is too long for me as I have a small area on half of my Pond and I don't want 2 or 3 feet of the bar running under water. As far as the 7 foot cutting in the field--I'd wish it had a slower 1st gear as the stuff I'm cutting isn't thin and it wants to bog down the engine. I do need to sharpen the blades a bit but unless the grass is easy--I don't think I'd use a 7 foot sickle on the 8n for production cutting.I wouldn't count on adding weight on the tractor as a solution--just slower tractor speed--or more blade speed [or less blades] I know once I cut it down to 5 feet--it will help me as I only need it a few hours a year.--PeP

P, you can shorten the bar to any length you want. Just get a shop to remove outer shoe assy and the sickle and cut it off. Drill new holes for the shoe assy and cut off the sickle. Make sure you cut off in ft. or half ft. increments.
