9N gets fire and gas but won't run

Just picked up a 1941 9N changed over to 12 volt. Tractor gets good fire to all plugs. I checked each wire at the plug for firing with tester. Pulled each individual plug and cranked engine over with finger on plug hole. Each seemed to have fairly good compression (no tester). Has a lite back firing out of carb when cranking. It doesn't look like distributor was removed since it last run, to much oil and grease/dust on bolts. Any ideas ??

I agree with dell.. compression out the carb on cranking sounds like an open intake valve to me..

Time to pull valve cover for a looksee.

It takes three things to run: spark at the right time, compression & fuel in the correct mixture. Sounds like you have spark & compression. Did you turn the gas on? Remove the bolt at the bottom of the carb & check for fuel flow. And, if it's been a while since it had a tune up, get a set of points, a condenser & a rotor & install them. Point gap is .015.

Sam..... ..you write..... "Has a lite back firing out of carb when cranking"..... .sounds like "sticky valves" to me. Thumb onna sparkie hole AIN'T very reliable compression tester.

Most likely need to take yer valve-cover plates off behind yer carb manifold and squirt'em and brush'em good with "solvent" of yer choice. I'd probably use Marvel Mystery Oil but others swear that regular automatic tranny oil is just as good.

Then CHANGE yer 6-qts of DIRTY STICKY GUMMY engine oil. Use good DETERGENT 30wt oil. Change yer oilfilter too.

Then iff'n you still can't gitt'chur engine started, Change yer SPARKIES 'cuz all yer crankin' done went and FLOODED yer sparkies and them lazy sparkies gonnna leak off the center electrode and NOT jump the gap. Recommend NEW CLEAN AUTOLITE 437 sparkies, gapped 0.025"..... ..Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister
