I have taken off the gas tank from my 1952 Ford 8n and there is a manufactured bubble on top of the tank with a small pinhole in it. The tank is in good condtion with no leaks so I am wondering if that pinhole in the bubble was put there by the manufacture so as not to create a vaccuum in the tank as gas is being used. Does anyone know for sure if that is true. I would think that the tank would get all the air it needed from the sloppy fitting gas cap. Thanks.

Richard, if you have a vented gas cap, you don't need the vent hole in the tank. While you have it off the tractor, you might go ahead and seal it up to help keep dirt out, etc.

My tank had the vent hole soldered up when I bought it. Looked like it had been done a long time ago. A brand new tank I saw recently had the 'bubble' but no vent hole. I guess it's easy enough now to have a vented cap and it's certainly easier to check your gas cap for 'plugs' than it is to check the tank vent for plugs.

Yes that is the vent for the gas tank. Not all caps are sloppy there have been a few with the vent pluged up from mud dobbers and have drilled holes in their caps to vent the tank.

Richard - it is the gas tank vent - original gas caps were not vented - vented replacements are available.

Thanks to all of you who answered. I am relieved to find out that the pinhole was the gas tank vent. I was about to seal it up with some liquid weld. Richard D.
