I would first like to thank all who have responded to my on going challenge with my 8N. It started with the tractor stalling when getting hot. I could stop the stalling if I idled it down and let it run for a minute or so then I could continue at full throttle for about 10 min. before the cycle would begin again. After about a hour of this cyle I tried not letting it idled down and it stalled and would not start.

I have done the following with no real success in fixing the problem; 1. Drained the carb. Good and steady flow. Checked gas line (good flow)
2. Had mechanic remove, clean and recalibrated the points.
3. Removed the gas tank, cleaned the filter and took to rad shop and had it cleaned and boiled.
4. Checked for spark (good) changed out plugs

The end result is that it will turnover but will not start.
The only thing I can think of is the ignition.

A. Would this be the next logical step?
B. How does one check the ignition?

Am I getting close?

The main jet in the carb may have just stopped up, screw in the big screw till it bottoms, count the turns , and turn it back out the same amount.

That MAY clear it if it has an obstruction there.

Is it a 6v or 12v, front or side distributor? The diagnostics are different, so make sure you tell us what it is. It takes three things for an engine to run: spark at the right time, compression, & fuel in the right mixture. Lets start w/ spark. Remove a plug, or use an old one, ground it to the head, connect a plug wire, turn the key on & crank it. If you have a fat, bright blue spark, you are good to go. If you do not have spark, post back & you will get plenty of help. Next, lets consider fuel. Been setting for a while? Water in the gas? Maybe you forgot to put Stabil in the tank & the carb is gummed up. But, first things first....remove the bolt at the bottom of the carb, turn the fuel on & check for flow. As long as the gas is turned on at the sediment bowl, you should have a good flow of fuel. Don't forget that the N has three fuel screens & al lthree need to be cleaned. Next thing, get a can of starting fluid, remove the breather hose, turn the key on & crank the engine. After it turns over a few times, spray some fluid in the carb. Leave the choke alone! If it fires but won't start.... chances are it's carb cleaning time. Lastly, compression.....while that's not the likely problem....crank the engine & put your hand over the carb. If you feel good suction, that is a close enough compression check for the time being. Post back & you will get plenty of help!

You say:
4. Checked for spark (good) changed out plugs

Was this done when it would not start? If you have good spark you have verified the ignition as working, but it must be done at the time it will not start.

3 key ingredients: spark, fuel, compression.

if you have spark(verified already)then your coil is working.

you never said if you had fuel ON the plugs.
????

maybe the points were bad and now it is NOT TIMED?

It is always good to have a spare set (or two) of Autolite 437's around in these cases. Change them out, keep the old ones if they are still looking good, and clean then up later by burning them clean with a propane torch before you use them again. The torch will burn off the deposits left by a non-starting, flooding engine while you are figuring this out.

Possible ignition switch. Bypass ignistion switch and see if it solves problem. If so replace switch.

Did you accidentally switch wires while replacing the plugs, perhaps?

1243, same as Model T, Model A, etc. Number one is the cylinder closest to the radiator.

Delco systems and similar have a notch in the distributor housing to help you identify where the rotor position for cylinder #1 is on the distributor; someone else will have to tell you how to find it on your Ford.
