I recently became in charge of a 1950 8n. For at least the last 20 years it has ran unleaded gas with a lead additive. Is this my only option regarding fuel?

Thanks,

Mark St. John

MarkStJohn..... your ordinary autogas at the big city pump ALREADY HAS that LEAD SUBSTITUTE in it! It's called ethanol. And it's already in the gasoline. But if you like, you can send me $7/year and I'll guarantee your N-Ford not to "knock" or burn valves due to no lead in the gas. (grin)

There is only one thing good about the lead additive. That is to keep the company that sells it going. Or in other words its a total waste of money and doesn't do a thing for your engine in any way. So forget the stuff and save your money since it doesn't help the engine any

Alcohol doesn't have the same upper cylinder lubrication qualities as gasoline distilled from crude oil. I think someone on here last year said you could use alcohol but you still needed to add some kerosene to the mix for lubrication.

I had mentioned that. Actually the ATF wanted us to add the kerosene so folks would not DRINK the stuff. We were using 80% alchy and 15% water and 5% kerosene. No gasoline. We were making the alchy from jerusalem artichoke -- you would not WANT to drink it anyway since it smelled like rotten potatos.

(And yes i did have a New York State permit to distill the stuff.)

Well if the lead additive did not hurt it in 20 years I don"t think it will. I use ther stuff in all my junk and as far as I can tell I have not hurt anything yet. Costs me about $7.00 a year.

Yes, Dunk, I would like to be a partner in that venture. Ye know what they say about a "sucker" being born every day. No, I don't want a shot of whiskey, but if ye got a 'cold beer' I have one of those with you.

You way up on my list of good folks!!

Life is a highway, sometimes you crash and burn, sometimes you wreck and walk away a better person.

No one can control what life hands them for the big part, and we all hang on to those that have gone on, that we still need our answers from.

And sometimes, we still hear the answers..

I know I do...

Mark..... ..would you believe that the 6.5:1 low-compression N-Engine designed in 1939 for 70-octane NO-lead white gas? Additionally, it has "hardened" valve-seats so you don't haffta worry about burning the seat with no-lead gasoline. Todays cheapest no-lead is 87-octane. And besides that, enny lead additives you buy contain NO-LEAD ennyways, EPA ya know. But iff'n it makes you feel warm and fuzzy fillin' the snakeoil purveyors pocket with obscene profits, go right ahead. It's bad enuff ya haftta fork-out $3/gal that costs less than $50c to produce ..... ....Dell

Gas, Coleman Fuel, Ehtanol ? in reply to Dell (WA), 06-18-2007 19:35:12
Dell does that mean if I don't like buying 87 octane at $3+ a gallon I could go to wally world and buy coleman fuel (aka white gas)?

Course I think coleman fuel is about $5 a gallon now but at least I would have another option right? I learned sumthin today...third party image

I guess my real thought and question would be about running ethanol? Around here I can buy 85% ethanol for about $2.60 a gallon... but I guess the question on that isn't if it would run on it but would it increase corrosion on the tank, fuel lines, carb, etc.? My understanding is that besides computer issues on newer cars the next biggest concern is corrosion caused by the water that the alchohol can hold... thoughts?

James

James..... ..dunnno, last time I looked at Coleman fuel it was colored "greenish".

Back in 40's as I remember, white gas had NO road tax and was "illegal" to use in vehicles, but ok to use in lanterns and cookstoves and was only sold at feedstores for farmers. Road gas was yellowish and then there was RED "Ethel" hi-test for high-compression engines. It stopped engines from "knockin".

Sold alotta Ethel in mountains of Colorado to keep engines from knocking due to over-advanced ignition timing trick used to increase horsepower lost to altitude..... ...Dell

Temperature may have some influence, but for the most part, maybe....

I live in GA, what do I know about temp?

From some of the late post, I may cannot..???

But the Northern folks can?

I talk alot, but don't say anything..

The N motors have hardened valve seats. No lead additive or high octane needed. It'll be happy or regular 'ole 87 octane unleaded.

I rebuilt mine 23? years ago, and again last year?

Time slips by so fast these days.. Tomorrow I will be as old as the Ole Lady, she's been older me since Feburary, I'll be 51.

There I go ramblin...

I don't think you need the lead additive (snake oil).

But then most folks know I am off my rocker...
